I have had some success following only stocks that have stayed above or near their 20 day ema's for some extended period of time.....long enough to prove this to be the "norm". Pickings are slim but profits seem to be more the norm....just don't be too greedy. Has anyone any advice to add to or amend this rather simplistic system?

Yes, do a search
The volume-weighted moving average (VWMA) gives the moving average (SMA) greater importance to "volume" by weighing prices with respect to "trading activity" in a predefined period of time. Define the time period & you are halfway there.

Tons of reading material
@knothead27 you will find pages & pages of information about this moving average. I also have a strategy dedicated to the "VWMA Strategy". The "Dump it here" thread allows me to post to stimulate interest in systems that make money or have the potential to make money. I've used the VWMA indicator in some of my strategies with outstanding performance.

Skate.
