Interactive Brokers Troubleshooting

Re: Interactive brokers platform

A few times, I tried their stop loss. Only once I get my stop loss executed. It seems logic if i have stop loss limit, once the price is crossed, it would be executed but no !!!

So, I do not think it is human error on my part is it ???

I just do not understand ?

Stop loss limit?
Do you know what order types you are using?

Re: Interactive brokers platform

Put me down for one who doesn't know what they are doing
Set some orders in my paper trading account (forward testing a system)

when i got to work this morning they are gone?

They were sent via API and definitly arrived in IB

If anyone knows pm me :)

Cheers

Probably "Good For Day" orders. getting purged end of US close.

Re: Interactive brokers platform

Hi Abundant,

I agree with TH on this, there is nothing wrong with the platform, it's actually a beautiful thing . Why don’t you open a paper trading account to practice ,then when you get the hang of it put on your live trades.

BTW, a troubleshooting thread already exists. :)

Anyone know of a quick way to enter a bunch of ASX symbols into IB from a Excel list?

Thanks

You need to save a .txt file (I just use notepad)

In the file, create one comma-delimited line for each line of market data you want using the syntax described below.:

DES, UNDERLYING, SECTYPE, EXCHANGE,

A stock contract for symbol BHP in this line type would look like this:

DES, BHP, STOCK, ASX

Then save, and to import:

FILE > IMPORT CONTRACTS

Here is an ASX Top 20 already made:

DES, AMP, STOCK, ASX
DES, ANZ, STOCK, ASX
DES, BHP, STOCK, ASX
DES, BXB, STOCK, ASX
DES, CBA, STOCK, ASX
DES, CSL, STOCK, ASX
DES, FGL, STOCK, ASX
DES, MQG, STOCK, ASX
DES, NAB, STOCK, ASX
DES, NCM, STOCK, ASX
DES, ORG, STOCK, ASX
DES, QBE, STOCK, ASX
DES, RIO, STOCK, ASX
DES, SUN, STOCK, ASX
DES, TLS, STOCK, ASX
DES, WBC, STOCK, ASX
DES, WDC, STOCK, ASX
DES, WES, STOCK, ASX
DES, WOW, STOCK, ASX
DES, WPL, STOCK, ASX

Re: Interactive brokers platform

Possibly
I am sure they were set GTC
The API tab doesn't even show up now im at work so they are gone :(

So you put trades though something that used a API then haven't that connected now? maybe thats it? I don't know I always have NT & TWS running.

Ok, this explains orders being gone, but still does not explain the stop loss thingy ???

i just use the FXtrader to open position by clicking buy or sell then I adjust it on IB trader platform. Changing to stop, then put in the price. When you do stop loss, does it go to the Aux column or Limit column.

It could be me not understanding the platform perhaps

Yes
Used Amibroker to Automatically send my orders via API into TWS
They showed up fine at home
Arrived at work, opened amibroker and they are not in there, not even under the API tab that i managed to get up
It's ok
Thats why im doing it in the paper trading account first

The FxTrader webinar showed how to attach a simple bracket order so that stop loss and profit targets can be set.

I ran the webinars directly from the email links, seemed to work fine, may be a minor delay while buffering but otherwise is good. btw, i'm using IE.

Guys,
A few notes with IB on ASX Equities:

1. Transferring of $ from IB to aussie bank account can take up to 3 working days IF funds were transferred after 2pm that day and the last of the 3rd day being a US holiday such as memorial day as today.

2. Shorting ASX stocks required a bit more margin as I'm sure some of you have come across. As an example, I shorted GDN at 0.17 cents [20-5-09] and covered it at 0.12 [21-5-09] but when I shorted, IB liquidate part of my position due to lack for funds even though I've got more than triple that amount. Anyway, lost $$ on the short covering initially but made up at the end. neutral trade so just the cost of lesson.

3. Trailing stops on IB: I suspect the professional knows how to take these out especially if they are too tight. Have done them too many times and got taken out only to see the securities goes higher. I've now reduced my position and widening the stops.

Reason for the tight stops is because the cost of brokerage is only $6 so my thinking is why left the position go against me too much.

4. Beware of a bug with trails on IB.

As an example, I was in a long position IMI for $0.005 but have a trail set automatically to $0.025. The trade got excuted but as you can see, the stop would mean that the stock would have to got to -0.02 before it takes me out which is silly.

Well the platform does not take me out but lets me trade the long position. When I realized what I've done the next day, I attempted to set the stop back to -0.002 which means I'll be stopped out at 0.003. IB takes me out at 0.004. Calling IB, the reps told me that this was a bug I've discovered.

IB is a platform that takes time to get used to but totally professional in my opinion. The IB platform has been a best journey so far.

Good luck

Paul

Just a heads up in case anyone's also experiencing a problem with FTSE backfills - the latest TWS Beta dated 29/05 FIXES the issue, and the backfills are fine now :)

On the charts, how do you stop the gaps in between trading days(2 days or more) appearing, and having price action altogether. Not in trading day clumps?

Warning ... this double limit trading happens again !!!

I just found out how. The system refreshes a few times during the day, and for some reasons they flush out the setups. ACTUALLY, they did not. They do not show on the screen. I have proof of it.

At ten am, it closed automatically which means I have to log in. Surprise surprise all the setups are there which I could not see before !!!

It is a major system anomaly IB .. fix it !!!

Now I know why I keep getting the doubles even though on the trading screen, there is only one !!!

Quick question about Australian stock dividends. I assume they are paid into the account as per the actual date of payment of the underlying share?

Will you get anything like a dividend statement which talks about the degree of franking etc as per CHESS holdings?

Thanks

Yep,dividends are credited straight to your account.

No, you don't get a statement similar to what you're describing that breaks everything down, but the dividend does show up on your account statements and so does any tax that was deducted.

BTW, I think i know what's next, how are franking credits handled ? Something i'm not sure about, i'll have to discuss it with my accountant shortly.
