Doctors may be forced to amputate a 12-year-old girl's arm after a vicious dog attack in Darwin.
The girl suffered deep lacerations to her right arm after her family's pet dog mistook her for someone trying to break into the house, the NT News reports.
She underwent emergency surgery and skin grafts after the attack last Friday, and as of last night she was still in hospital in a stable condition.
The newspaper said it was believed the girl was walking home from school with her brother to their home on Darwin’s outskirts and found they had been locked out of their home.
The girl climbed in through a window and the dog ”” reported to be a bull-mastiff great Dane cross ”” attacked her.
Police and ambulance officers were alerted to the attack by the girl's brother, with police forced to shoot the out-of-control dog when they got to the house at about 3.30pm on Friday.
According to statistics from the Australian Institute of Health, the Northern Territory has the highest rate of people hospitalised for dog attacks in the nation.
