Funnily enough I find Canada, New Zealand and Australia the most attractive societies in the World, amazing how we always yearn to change things, for a perceived unknown gain.
I personally don't see us being part of a united family, with the U.K, NZ and Canada as a negative, I guess I don't see it as a failing. There are a hell of a lot of people wishing they were a part of our family, than living in most of the Republics of the World
It's an interesting subject and is another one that is driven by emotion, rather than any logical basis IMO.

Precisely why they want to wreck it.

It doesn't take a lot of thought to work out why politicians want to change Australia, it's too easy to get their ar$e slung out the way it is at the moment, which is exactly the way it should be IMO.
Just slowly dismantling Australia's identity one step at a time.

1935 was when it became 26 Jan officially and it wasn't till 1994 that all states and territories had it as a public holiday.

It's like the flag, our soldiers would have fought under in WW1 - a red one, not blue. And it was even used in WW2 often. Menzies passed the flag act in 1953 to get rid of it. Some Diggers were upset.


So I get annoyed when politicians say stupid stuff to try to influence us.

Australia should remember traditionally we use to take their words with a lot of skeptism. We aren't or we didn't at least used to be stupid like other countries and fall for this sht.

My Grandfather, if he was still alive, would think I was a nutcase if I was one of those who want to fight for a blue flag or fight for an Australia day which changed during his lifetime.

He would have sneered at politicians vain use of patriotism as he had seen his friends die in a ditch while people like Billy Hughes tried to force conscription so more of us could die on foreign shores.

Don't forget the Australian spirit and don't turn into a pommy or Yank. Have respect.

Like i said in another thread, we are trying to demand inclusiveness, by using divisiveness.
I can understand that some don't like the idea of Australia day and good on them, ignore it, demand to go to work on that day and be paid single time.
There are others who like the idea of Australia day and want to respect it with a day of to celebrate living in a great Country.
Why should those who want to celebrate it be penalised?
Why do we celebrate Easter? many find Christianity repulsive as was shown during the Israel Folau incident, so maybe cancel that too.
Also on that subject the Greek Orthodox and several other religions recognise a different date, so we may as wellflck off christmas, while we are at it
While we are at it, the Kings Birthday holiday what a joke, Albo is a dead set Republican, so cancel that as well.
$hit we will have Australia's productivity problem sorted in a day, let's be fully inclusive and pizz off all public holidays, because some group or another has a gripe about all of them.

Or maybe we should be inclusive and accept that our society has grown with 'Australia's' own set of beliefs and customs, like long service leave etc, if you don't like the way it is you don't have to recognise them, that is inclusiveness.
No one demands anyone pay homage to anything they don't want to, from what I've seen, that's freedom of choice.

Sadly, I see everyone celebrating Halloween much more. We know which chains are trying to push those awful orange and black plastic land fill rubbish. Whether we do and we do acknowledge Australia Day, please ignore Halloween first!

She is now banned from Coles and Woolworths.
Our friendly all Aussie Spud Shed owner has seen the error of the others way and is going all out promoting Australia day.

Well let's be honest, if all of a sudden everyone is becoming moral and self righteous in the name of respecting other people's perspective on issues, everyone should give up long service leave.
It was granted due to the expectation British colonisers would require that amount of time, to go back to the U.K to visit their loved ones, who they had left behind to build this country.
So that era is long gone and in respect to the employers, the three months long service leave should be removed, in the name of fairness and inclusiveness to the employers.
Also why should people who have no link to the U.K get it anyway. Lol
Jeezus we could respect ourselves to death.

I am more patriotic than most.
We need a day of national holiday and Anzac day also. In my view we should pick another day for Australia day. No big deal. It's not like it's Bastille day.

I have taken my kids to Dawn service and when I was a cub leader I took the 8-11 year old cubs to the local RSL on Anzac day weekend where the last post ceremony was performed.

In the Beer and Beef club we always toast to Australia at the start of each get together

As a lighting engineer I work for one of the last Australian owned large engineering firm and refuse to work for foreign firms. I specify Australian made products as much as I can and pressure the other engineers to do the same.

It is not the Australian way to walk around wearing a flag or carrying a flag and putting one up outside our house.
We are patriotic but not loud about it.

I have only disgust for politicians of any persuasion that seek to use my patriotism to gain advantage and frankly confected outrage from them doesn't cut it. Looking at you Dutton. Demanding a store sell certain products is socialism and anti Australian and the extensive positive reporting of this by the foreign owned press is also anti-Australian.

I have only disgust if business, particularly foreign owned firms, seek to do the same, e.g. what Virgin Airlines was going to do.

We are Australian and proud of it.

I am not going to go and live overseas for a tax break.

I am not going to be happily manipulated for political gain, be it the Greens , the Libs or Labor.

Spot on Knobby, it's about time Aussies stood up and said, we are Australian, if you don't like it sod off or shut the flck up and pull your Weight.
Why should you or I be told when to celebrate Australia Day, or where to shop.
They could incorporate ANZAC Day and Australia Day, as it is a day of pride for all Australians.

This has been around the mulberry bush a zillion times, nothing wrong with celebrating Australia warts and all and having a day off, also nothing wrong in my view for those that want to celebrate the start of British settlement for what it was but I think we really do need to move on from the combination of the two.

As for Dutton playing the divisive game / culture wars yes Knobby both my grandfathers that fought in the trenches WW1 would agree with you.

Yes,the wife's Grandfather was at the Somme, also was an Australian log chopping champion apparently, I said to the wife when we first got married, "you're the one with the good genes, you chop the wood".
That was my first experience, with the wife's nasty side.

In all the years thatIi worked as a paid employee, 20 years was the starting point for long service, now it seems to be a minimum number of years. I never lasted long enough to get the leave anyway. Now I struggle to get even a holiday.

Well let's be honest, I've never seen so many tents on vacant blocks in my life, now it is commonplace and beginning to look really third World.

The sad part is, once the ball is rolling, it is like a snowball, this is the first time since the 70's that pump priming to this degree has been done.

Hopefully it lands better than last time, the difference this time is the added immigration to the recipe, so time will tell as usual.

I'm not feeling confident about W.A toward the end of this year, or the beginning of next year it feels very uneasy IMO.

But hey what would I know, I bought into the potash story.

Tbh, I'm not feeling very patriotic at this point. This is not the same country my family immigrated to in the seventies. We have a government, bureaucracy and academia that is subtly, if not sometimes overtly anti-Australian, such as it is.

Any sense of community has *mostly died a slow miserable death and is in rigour mortis. We are a nation deeply divided and collectively too @#$&ing stupid to realise that on several levels, we have been played.

I think there is still a glimmer of hope, but currently there is no great idea that unites us at all.

Australia has changed. In the 70s it was all about giving everyone a fair go and being equitable, and we had a good pension, lots of public housing, most people were in Unions, a boss of a company would only earn 5 times the workers wage, and there were a lot if startup companies and taxes were highly skewed. Football , cricket, tennis, squash and horse racing were our sports.

Today, a CEO will earn 1000 times the wage, duopolies and similar exist everywhere, and people are much more influenced by the USA. I will never forget the shock I got of anti vaxxer protesters wielding the US flag.

The ideal of an equalitarian society is hotly contested.

In that we are like most of the world.

It's not all bad though. We were pretty insular in many respects and how we treated in particular unmarried pregnant women and aboriginals was a bit piss poor.

And of course there was no such thing as an Australia Day holiday, that was still 20 years away.

We had lots of public housing, because the Governments had State Housing commissions, that actually employed workers had yards and workshops and employed apprentices to build public housing.

I got more of a shock, when in Kambalda my oldest son's best mate, both sparkies, was told take the shot or you're sacked.
He took the sack, still in Kambalda, nice guy 42 years old two kids, his wife died of cancer there about 7 years ago, she actually was a great person too had a gardening business.
So don't get too down about flag wavers in the U.S, there is plenty of $hit goes down here.

Absolutely, maybe some of the elites could head out to Uluru and show their support for the indigenous, it is turning to $hit out there, you know the ones they all gave the big high five for. Absolute dicks.

The tourist numbers have dropped from 300,000 - 400,00 visitors a year, to 140,000 visitors a year.

I took the kids there 6 times and two have taken their kids, so maybe some of these equalitarian people in Melbourne/ Canberra/ Sydney could drag their lazy fat ar$es out there and support those who they were so keen to man up for. FFS

It was, I have a disabled daughter that could be on disability, but because she is pretty special and has amazing self respect has always worked, she had a child through IVF he is now 13, Labor under Julia Gillard made her lose the single parent pension when he turned 8.

She struggled on not complaining, but elected to donate the remaining 3 embryo as she couldn't afford to keep paying for them to be frozen.
Well she wanted to donate them, guess what you, can't do that, you use them or destroy them, long story short son number two.

So now we have them all living with us and she owns the house, funny who wudda guessed the unintended consequences.

That's another funny one, the same daughter works three days a week(Mon,Tues,Thur) since the second son was born and she moved in with us.

She has worked for the local council for 20 odd years, if her Monday falls on a public holiday, she had to work back the hours.
That was until about a year ago, when they told her she didn't have to do it anymore( 20 years ago I wanted to go down the council and rip them another one, but she says "Dad I don't mind, I like to go to work and pay my way".
I'm sure they were ripping her off.

Then I've got to listen to the FCKN dribble on here FFS.
Sometime, some of the Melbourne/Sydney centric, should drag their head out of their nether regions and really go out into the outback and live there.

My rant for the week, school holidays is over soon, so the tension should reduce.
I would love to actually have a talk to some of these bleeding heart club members, the only problem would be, there would be more bleeding than fckn hearts.
