Honeymoon destinations

It's funny how honeymoons have become bigger and bigger over the years. When we went to Port Douglas it was considered the height of extravagence, nowadays quite a lot of people have a full blown European tour as their honeymoon. My parents had a few days at Flinders (running joke in our family as Flinders is not in the least bit exciting or romantic )

Travelling overseas worked out alot cheaper than travelling in the country many years ago, and I think its the same now

I'm always in favour of keeping your money in our country too. I don't know if either of you have a love of sailing, or would like to give it a go? Why not consider chartering a yacht and sailing around the Whitsundays for a few nights, maybe followed by a couple of nights at one of the resorts? It's really quite easy once you've had the briefing, and you can take the fully catered option and fly in and out of Hamilton Island. Would be beautiful at that time of year, and the snorkelling around Hook Island is to die for.

young-gun, ignore the question if it seems intrusive, but I'm interested to know what you have planned for your wedding.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've been a bit morbidly fascinated by the TV program "Four Weddings" where the competing brides to be are very bitchy about one another and are competing for the best wedding, sometimes spending what seem to me ridiculous amounts of money which could better go to a deposit on a home etc.

Others might like to tell us what their marriage ceremonies were? Just a basic "I Will" etc in a registry office, or the full scale theatrical event with a dozen bridesmaids?

My wedding was a classic, the inlaws said" we have a lot of relatives, therefore apart from your immediate family you can invite 6 people". Well I knew 10 out of 150 people.
The honeymoon was a 1,500klm road trip and a two man tent. Best 10 days of my life.

Just incase anyone was curious we have decided and booked to go to boracay(or should i say my fiance decided)! Thanks again for all the suggestions, but i quite enjoy scuba diving and from what i hear the diving is amazing over there, combined with everything else!

not at all julia, sorry about the delayed reply.

We are getting married in a grove on a noosa beach, for those of you familiar with queenslands southeast. then heading near by for the reception at a very nice(but affordable) golf course/resort(noosa springs i think). I've been blessed with a woman who doesn't see the point in paying exorbitant amounts of money for a singular day, albeit an important one. in saying that we have kept costs to a minimum and we are still forking out alot of cash! the biggest expense being the reception and all those people that 'have to be there'.

myself and a yacht would not be a relaxing time, would be great to do with a skipper! definitely something on our to do list

Hi young-gun, I was just thinking about where you chose to go when I clicked on ASF and you already posted it! Well done on your choice. I like the Philippines and always wanted to go to Boracay but the weather let me down twice and I never made it. Maybe this year.....

I spend half my life travelling and since I posted on this thread last we did a cruise to the South Pacific and we loved it. My wife said it was the best holiday in all her life! Anyhow someone mentioned Vanuatu earlier and recommended it. I concur, top place, I wouldn't mind spending some more time there.

Anyhow all the best to you and the other half, take care and enjoy Boracay.

We were going to go to Jordan and see Petra but did't think that would be very relaxing!

So we've been back for a week or two now from our honeymoon in boracay(philipines). We stayed in the Shangri-la resort. Very impressive resort. The service was unbelievable. The staff were so happy and friendly, helpful and provided fantastic drinks, food and activities.

We ventured out of the resort into the main part of the island(d-mall) and enjoyed a bit of the culture from fish-spa's and helmet diving, to island hopping, night clubs and knock off sunnies for $1AU. Unfortunately we knowingly went in the wet-season, and there was a typhoon off the east coast for the first 6 days which brought torrential rain for 80% of the time. Once it fined up we got plenty done and got to enjoy some snorkelling the beaches the resort was situated on.

Aside from the rain(and the locals trying to sell you something quite literally every 20 steps you take), it was a great trip and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys travelling.

Koh Samui was actually on our list of places to choose from. Seemed like a really nice place. From memory the travel agent was saying going to that particular island gets you away from the busier party type islands, and gives you more of a chance to kick your feet up. Just looking at some of the resorts on google, I'd kill to be there right now haha.

Tropical holidays are easily my most favourite get-away, nothing beats them. In saying that our next trip is either going to be an african safari(if I can convince my wife that the animals aren't just running around killing each other) or a trip starting in canada and going down through the states, and hopefully hit a bit of south america. If it were upto me I would probably head straight to south america.

Anyway i am sure you guys will have a blast in Koh samui. When's the big day?

We are just back from a long SE Asia trip and spent 5 nights on Koh Samui. What a top joint, beautiful clean beaches, nice cheap accommodation, friendly locals, little traffic and just a nice laid back island. Will definitely do another trip there next year.

Boracay is still on my to do list, one day, all the best and happy travels.

Our wedding is Jan 5. Our honeymoon is a few months later as Jan is peak time for Koh Samui, saves us over $1600 in flights and accom. My first non-military overseas trip. Cannot wait!
