I can`t think of anything that would cover all patients with $400 but something that would eat up the healing time are laptop computers with internet connection. Directing attention away from injuries can be very beneficial.

Perhaps a range of DVDs then? Could buy quite a few, or even a nice TV.

What I have done for a caridac ward was donate a peice of medical equipment to the ward. I asked the nurses what was needed then with the help of the hospital admin staff had that device purchased. Its a lot of red tape but I think it is money better spent.

Nice idea, GG. Nursing homes are always immensely grateful for volunteers to befriend residents who don't have family to visit them. And some of these old folk have some amazing lives to talk about.

I'm really impressed with these posts. So good to know that younger people (though I guess I'm making assumptions here) are conscious of the benefits of making a contribution to the community.

Don't donate money to the hospital. This greedy state government offsets their budget with donations of money. As has been suggested find out what you can afford from suggestions from doctors and staff and get something the budget doesn't provide.

Another project I can recommend is to find some piece of equipment that the hospital needs and join a campaign with others to get it for the hospital. A couple of years ago I spent some time in a hospital where one of the surgeons told me my stay would have been shorter if the hospital could have had a particular piece of equipment worth $375,000. From the hospital bed I made sufficient contacts and put pressure on the right people to ensure that the equipment was available before I was discharged. All I contributed was imagination and effort.
