Is it a social norm for people to buy their lunch these days?

be it at work, in university etc, it seems as though people are willing to folk out money for ridiculously overpriced sandwiches and drinks at lunchtime, during the week?

it almost seems as though it's a social norm to buy lunch when outside home..

is it because these people don't have enough time to prepare lunch at home or rather they want to 'fit in'?

imagine how much they could be saving,, then people complain about being in debt

Yeh i think it is now 'normal' to buy lunch.

I buy mine about once a fortnight as a treat, but aside from that will either go home for lunch or take it with me

Of course is it but what do you expect kids learn from a young age when going to school (parents are too lazy to make them lunch) so they have food from the canteen at least 2-3 times a week.

I remember taking pasta and all sorts of left overs from the night before (home made salami etc...) but for me lunch and sport was the best part of school.

So overall more people would buy their lunch more often than make it.

yeah it's normal, but worth complaining about at the same time.

My Grandfather used to tell me that after he had walked 52 miles through the middle of the desert to get to primary school with no shoes on(they didn't have those fancy "universities" in those days, after primary school you were educated by the school of hard knocks), he had to turn around and go into the mountains where it was always snowing to catch his own lunch! And that was back before the days of hunting knives, he had to catch and kill bears with his bare(ha ha get it) hands, before lighting a fire and cooking it before going back to school in the afternoon.

You young people have it so easy these days, what with your pre packaged lunches, shoes, cars and the like!

You can't take one of these from home. :)

Hahaha...

Someone's had a good night/ week. :D

For me. Nothing beats the $4 specials the asian stall at the ref gives out at 4pm.

ageo - your story reminds me of a sketch santo cilauro did years ago on D-Generation about the wog kid having whatever his mamma gave him for lunch at school - salami, pasta, a lump of bread etc etc - and all the aussie kids with their white bread vegemite or jam sandwiches giving the kid heaps.

all those years later theres a lot to be said for the wog food - cant remember the last time i had a white bread sandwich.

Most people where I work either don't have lunch at all or bring something from home, eat it and then go back to work. It would just take too long to walk to the shop, buy lunch etc even if I ate it walking back.

Also I think my home made bread etc is almost certainly healthier - shops will probably add various fats etc.

I always go to Woolworths the night before - get a cheap bread roll and some honey mustard turkey - fill it with delicious salad and cranberry sauce - or some ham and my favourite Branston pickles. Buy a watermelon and rock melon and cut it up into blocks which last me about 3 days.

Or, buy some Turkish pide and get some thinly sliced sweet potatoe with a thin bit of steak from last nights dinner - add some letuce and bbq sauce, and put it in the toaster at work.

I don't think I have bought lunch in about 3 years.

Incidently, I grew up living with my nan, and on Monday's for school we would have left over leg of lamb from the bake dinner the day with tommy sauce. Go you good thing.

If I am (rarely) unprepared:

The closet I would get to 'take out' would be a Lean Cuisine heated up from Woolworths around the corner from my work - but ONLY if it is under $5 and on special.

Some tips:

Add extra to your herbed up baked veges for dinner - sweet potato, pumpkin (add a bit of sugar for sweetner), parsnip, carrots, zuchinni. Add it into your salad the next day. Tastes great the next day with the herbs having a chance to diffuse into the next day.

Branston pickles rock - very English - dont like the 'aussie' style of pickled onion. Get amongst the chutney - love the apple and mango chutney on chicken - or just the cranberry sauce.

As you lay out your sandwhich there in the lunchroom - do yourself a favour and grab a bag of your favourite chips (honey baked ham) or something from RedRock... and tip them out next to your Sandwich.

I gave the idea to a local cafe in my area, and its a bit of a hit. Something they do in England all the time, that us aussies seem to think is a bit of a hoot.

IM hungry now
Brad

I was given a packed lunch every single day all throughout school.

I now buy it everyday.

Why? Lazy. Don't want to waste time doing something boring like making lunch, when I can spend it on ASF talking about why people these days don't make their own lunch instead. ;)

Not to mention, going out and getting lunch everyday is a social activity for me. Catch up with mates etc.

I eat 7-8 meals per day, and I make every one of them. I carry around a cooler bag around with me everywhere I go. With the types of food I eat, it works out a hell of alot cheaper. Plus if I make it I know whats in it!

im 9 meals.... :p get eating skinny :p

Good arguments for both sides, really.

I think the social aspect plays a large role on eating out; but at least in my case ... that's hardly an issue. I (very rarely) buy lunch for the flavour; as I simply cannot cook Chinese, or cook other meals like the professionals do.

What I absolutely refuse to do though - is spend $4 on a cup of coffee. Never in a million years ... how can these pirates get away with it? I went to the cinemas the other day (saw the new bond flick - major let down), and it was $11 for a medium popcorn with a cordial fanta! Never too young to start being thrifty in my opinion.
