What drives people to become prostitutes?

Re: What drives people to prostitutes?

Oh so you mean what drives people to become prostitutes. Hmmmm good question....

After the 240point drop on the DOW overnight - I might have to give it a whirl to mitigate anicipated big losses next week.

Re: What drives people to prostitutes?

Is it the money? Drugs? or quick money?

Could take you question opposite to what I think is intended.

The customer, 1) for relief 2) control ( self esteem problem)

Prostitute, all of your above Flying Fish but contemporary times drugs is that prime culprit of the street workers. When on the beat as a young plod, most on the street were single mums trying to survive. There was not the welfare support or public tolerance in those times.

In the big reputable establishments (among others) many are for example single professionls with other careers, persuing "the multiple streams of income concept"

Re: What drives people to prostitutes?

I recently read an interesting book by two sociologists who had studied the 'profession' of Call Girls in Sydney. NB Call girls are a distinct species from brothel workers.

In almost every case, these women were considerably older than brothel workers and only about 10% had a drug or alcohol addiction. They had widely differing backgrounds - several were tertiary educated - and had chosen the life on the basis of the freedom of being self employed, and the excellent income. Some worked from home but most set up an apartment where they went to work. Few of them had had any problems with their customers, many of whom were professional people and regular clients.
About half the women in the study were in a permanent relationship and reported that their partners were 'quite OK' about what they did.
Only one woman said that she pursued prostitution as a career simply because she really enjoyed sex. The others said they switched off when working, despite giving the opposite impression to their clients.

The authors made the point that the girls who work in brothels or on the street are usually much younger and a much greater proportion have drug and alcohol problems as their motivation.

Re: What drives people to prostitutes?

I know someone (female) who did that line of work for 5 years followed by working as a stripper and running various (non-sex related) businesses.

Bottom line - she's now worth an outright fortune and is one of the most stable, level headed people I've ever met.

Apparently, sex is the easy bit. Making serious money, by finding and keeping the best clients, is where the skill is (so I'm told).:2twocents

So in essence, the ones that make the money are preying on in stable people. This would be construed as some sort of explotation would it not?

oh boy - you hear this and you'd wonder if it's such a "great life" :(
I guess she made some money for her pimp
Interview with Kathleen S.; Oklahoma Street Prostitute
Kathleen is only 38 years old but the streets make her appear at least 60. She has had and given up 6 children during her life. Kathleen's only dream is to one day get off the streets, kick the drugs and be a wife and mother. When this interview was posted Kathleeen was currently incarcerated in Oklahoma for prostitution, assault and battery of a police officer and attempted escape

Offering a service in my view. Prostitution plays a big part in the reduction of rape. As a policewoman my Daughter worked in a large metro centre amongst that business. As distastful as it may be to some that is the way it is. Some people just have to have the physical contact and will take it by force if necessary

Personally I think its a clear case for Job Satisfaction.

Somehow I doubt job satisfaction comes into the equation, just think of all the dirty sexual acts you would have to perform on people, that you are clearly not attacted to such as people with missing teeth, people 3 times older than yourself, obese people, same sex people, ugly people etc....now how could this be called job satisfaction.

I think the only person that gets job satisfaction would be the client.

...there is a sexual act with the word job in it and it usually satifies now doesn't it...ohhh stop it or you will go blind;)

Moderators you may edit this post and infract me with a red card if you wish;)

, people 3 times older than yourself,

like the old bloke says to the hooker
"mmmmm -nowwwww I'm gonna take out me teeth .. mmmm m... so that ... ahhh .... you'll have .. ...mmm.... more room to ... errrrr... put your tongue in ..... ok?" :eek3:

lol...I guess their are just different forms of prostitution....some a little more upper-class and acceptable than others, but when it comes to the crunch the above was also prostitution in disguise:)

Indeed it is a case of "so I'm told". We actually met at a political rally at the Huonville Town Hall in early 1995. She knew more about the issue than probably 95% of people there, politicians (of both major parties) included.

Lives in Sydney now though we are still in regular contact. The only "business" I've done with her was as a photographer taking a few "adult" photos for a poster (fairly clean shots - just a pose with no others involved).

Doing such photos is actually quite a lot harder than you might expect - sorry guys but it really is mind on the photo and off the girl 100% of the time and it's nowhere near as much fun as you might expect. In all seriousness it does qualify as "work" and yes I was paid for the shots.:2twocents

Oh, for heaven's sake, Flying Fish! They are simply running a business.
They are offering a service. Their clients wish to buy that service.
The fact that a bloke chooses to pay for something which is somewhat unavailable to him elsewhere is no one's business, and does not classify him as unstable, whatever that means.

e.g. as I said in my original post, many of the clients of these fairly exclusive call girls were top businessmen, politicians etc, for whom the notion of an affair would be out of the question in terms of their public image. By using the services of a prostitute, no one gets hurt and no careers are ruined.
