I played soccer when I was young, at a reasonably high amateur level and I can't stand watching it.
That's why AFL is so popular, soccer is boring to watch and cricket is a summer sport.

Creditors have been told the combined Whyalla steelworks and nearby iron ore mines in the Middleback Ranges in South Australia are losing about $1.5 million a day.
KordaMentha’s Lara Wiggins said an early assessment of the operations showed that for the seven months ended January 31 the business made a loss of $319.1 million. Creditors are owed around $1.3 billion in total, the meeting was told

Suffice to say I've little doubt that if someone were to go through the finances of all companies with the same owner and examine them in detail, we'd find that the "loss" incurred by the steelworks isn't a loss in the manner most people understand that term to mean but rather it's the work of creative accounting.

Some businesses do a perfectly good job of running major infrastructure, others are shocking. Which is which comes down to management.
My observation being big business isn't all that different to government. There are brilliant people and there are duds and who's in charge of something has a huge bearing on the outcome.
Easiest way to get paid a lot of money is to have a government or senior manager who's desperate to hide a stuff up. For either category money suddenly becomes no object if it saves their reputation.

At least with government ownership you have SOME transparency, unlike corporations who can hide their transactions around different countries some of whom don't cooperate with Australia.Some businesses do a perfectly good job of running major infrastructure, others are shocking. If a business or sector is deemed too big or too critical to fail, the Government having an active interest in the sector at least puts checks and balances into play, if the Australian Government feels that an iron and Steel works is critical it makes sense to have one in Government control.
If a military conflict did eventuate we will need to have some capacity to produce our own equipment, yet during times of peace it may have to be subsidised, not every industry can compete and be profitable when in private hands yet the same business may provide an essential service.
A lot of these issues are coming to a head because of the post globalisation instability, caused by dependence on a foreign power to supply essential equipment and also because the last 80 years has been a relatively peaceful period in history, so supply disruption hasn't been an issue until now.
Everything was working so well with globalisation, until the cheap labour started talking back and not doing as they are told.

Which is what I thought on my recent trip to the U.S, the obvious wealth inequality there, can't be a lot different to the wealth inequality in a strong socialist society. There is the hopelessly poor and the obscenely rich, disproportionately represented in both political and economic extremes.
I guess Utopia lies somewhere in the middle, which fortunately Australia tends to hover around, in recent history.

That's true, but if you need to make something from steel during a conflict, it will be problematic if you don't have a blast furnace, or a steel furnace because they all closed down due to cheap imports.
Ebay wont work, if there is a war on.

I have Polish friends, father and son, that lived through the communist days of Poland. The story's they tell me confirm what I learnt at high school. Everyone was a worker, and all the workers lined up when grocery shopping. Everything was rationed, and lots of food stuffs not available. Everyone knew of someone that had been picked u and questioned because they had information of black-market purchases. Only the special people were allowed extras, certain people that were classed as essential.
That is communism, everyone is equally poor except the pigs.
At least with capitalism the poor have a chance to work their way up the ladder.
Yes, Australia has balanced its socialism and capitalism well over the years, form both sides of government. However, I fear that the unions and greens have a different plan ahead for us.

That's upto the people to decide, there is a shifting undercurrent happening in society at the moment, the pendulum swings as affluence ebbs and flows.
At the moment the working class, which should be the majority, is being hammered.
They will kick up and they are the western world over.
