I work in the oil and gas industry and a new venture has just started up. Im not on the job but have friends who are and everyone is Äpparently" investing in this company. Bearing in mind these guys are not share market savvy there just going on a wing and a prayer.
Am i allowed to ask what people think of this company on here or is that classed as insider trading??

Its not oil and gas its a sideline and there not drilling and i wont be passing on info about wells that have just been drilled or anything like that???

Its more i dont really know yet how to decide if a share is cheap, if a company has good management or that sort of thing.

Lol a wing and a prayer. Feels like that somedays. You'll find no shortage of opinions on various companies on the ASX around here :rolleyes:

Everyone here has different ways of analysing companies and investing accordingly and we freely share our opinions and research on these companies.

Insider trading is when you have information the market doesn't usually as an employee.

For example if you are on a rig that hits the motherlode and post that up here and says guys buy company ABC we just struck oil and it's going to rocket before the news is released to the ASX you are gonna be in deep doo doo.

It is a big big no no and ASIC will throw the book at you for doing it.:evilburn:

Hi Matt;

You can always ask people's opinion of share XYZ.

If what you have heard is not covered by Slipperz' category, i.e. if you or your mates didn't find the information as emplyees or contractors of XYZ, it's OK to even mention a rumour - as long as you state it as such. From what I gather, that doesn't apply, but there is often a fine line. Let's say you heard some juicy gossip about Neptune Marine, I wouldn't put it on an open Forum: although you may not have a direct connection, you might be perceived as having an unfair advantage. You should also bear in mind what the company itself makes of your disclosure - if the rumour turns out to be detrimental, a good lawyer could find a provision in laws covering libel or slander...

Repliers to your question will also be restricted to publicly available info, and employees and their associates will be well aware of the differences. They better be - or else...

It would probably make sense for people working on a new project to be investing in the future of the company. They would be closest to it and in theory have some excellent understanding of it's potential. They could also be getting special options or deals that make their entry price particularly attractive.

Generally speaking being that close to the project could make a person a bit unbalanced in their assessment. They might not appreciate competitors in the field or that the company itself might not have the management skills or finance to make a commercial success of a technical triumph. And finally there is always the possibility of competitors squeezing you out.

As discussed by other posters its probably worth seeing if the company is mentioned on ASF and making a contribution without ramping it up on clearly insider information. And new companies can always be added to the discussion forum.

Investors on this forum do appreciate an alert on potentially excellent new companies. However we would usually cross check the information against other sources and a wider analysis of the industry, the products, the management capabilities of the company and the financial structures in place to bring the product to market.:2twocents
