IMO we in W.A were very lucky to get two great Premiers in a row, Barnett and then McGowan, Barnett didn't get any financial support, the mining boom deflated and we were getting about 30c in the dollar from the GST. Labor did criticise him for building Fiona Stanley hospital, Princess Margarets childrens hospital, the Joondalup health campus, the Midand health campus, Perth stadium, the airport rail link, the Muchea Roe highway extension.Had pretty much total power and yet kept to the middle ground got the GST back ran surpluses, built infrastructure, roads etc he also showed how hollow the state Libs had become with COVID shut the gate with the massive majority agreeing those not agreeing weren’t Western Australians they didn’t have the chip on their shoulders.
Retiring at the top of your game is what rare champions do he will go down as one greats of Australian State politics meanwhile the hater’s are going to snipe away as they do
Then fortunately McGowan came in and Morrison gave him the GST deal, funny how McGowan used to take the pizz out of Barnett for asking the Feds for the deal, but that's politics.
He has done a great job of completing the projects started by Barnett and kicking on with new ones, W.A has struggled with infrastructure funding for years, yet they are called upon to pour the majority of funds into the Eastern States so they can build theirs.
With keeping the borders closed during covid, it was one of the first time in the Sate history that all the accomodation in the country towns was booked out, the caravan parks were full, the last thing W.A people were worried about was what the Eastern States people thought, they were only upset because they weren't getting the W.A tourist dollar, big deal. ?
Like I said, IMO a couple of great Premiers who put the State first, I'm sure he will do fine post politics.
