Hi All,

I was going to PM this to Joe, but I thought others might be able to assist.

I have been developing a website in PHP and MySQL on my home computer and I am at the stage of working out where to host it.

Has anyone had experience with this??? What are reliable (and reasonably cheap) web hosters that provide support for the latest PHP and MySQL (and phpMyAdmin) versions?

I am hoping the site would get some resonable traffic.....

Any help would be great.
Cheers

TJ

Ahhhh... hosting. Bad hosts have made me weep and curl up in the corner in the fetal position rocking slowly back and forth. :swear: :banghead:

Good hosts are hard to find. I am currently with A Small Orange and they have been great so far. They are also very competitively priced and have great support. Check out their virtual plans here.

They are the only host I can recommend, although I have also heard some good things about Perfect 10 Hosting.

Keep in mind all prices quoted for both are in $US.

Good luck with your search. :)

They both look pretty reasonable.

If you don't mind me asking - what were the problems you found with previous hosts??... I'm reasonably new to this.

1. The worst sin is bad support. If you have a wesbite like this where there is constant traffic and for some reason the :fan and there is nobody home at the host (or just as bad someone who doesn't know what they're doing), it can be extremely stressful.

2. Servers down a lot. Some hosts just seem to have a lot of downtime for some reason. Always make sure they guarantee their uptime. There's nothing worse than the server you're on being down and you're just sitting there imagining all the visitors trying to get to your site and finding it won't load!

3. In general watch out for small operators. Look for hosts who have been around for a while and have a reputation for quality. Anybody can become a host just by buying a reseller account at another host. Like you, I'm no computer genius, I'm learning as I go too and there needs to be someone knowledgable at the other end if you run into some problems. Be careful who you entrust your website to, you may wake up one morning and they mightn't be there anymore. The worst host I had said they were doing daily database backups (the one that contains ALL the posts on this forum). When I eventually moved hosts, I asked for a copy of the database and they said there wasn't one.

And there endeth the lesson for today. :D

P.S. The best way to get the lowdown on a host is do a google search on them. You'll probably end up at a webmaster or hosting forum where you will find people willing to share their first hand experiences with different hosts.

If you really want to do some research, start at somewhere like this: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

Thanks Joe ;)

TJamesX,

have a look at diveoz.com.au.

Neil (WEBGUY) over there runs the site and has done successfully for about 6 years. I can't think of a time when his site was down and I think he does his own hosting these days.

Contact him at webguy@diveoz.com.au

Cheers,
