VEA - Viva Energy Group

It's an interesting take on the future of petrol stations.

The idea is that as cars go electric, people will stop longer -about 20 minutes, so the store makes its money selling coffee and convenience food. If they can get this right, they can become the café.

Could be a winner. Plenty of risk though. I am not sure about the Coles Group products at present. Also the average staff member of these petrol stations isn't your metrosexual typical at standard cafes....but it is early days.

Are current petrol stations large enough to cope with the demand for recharging? Normally you fly in and out in 5 minutes and other cars might even be waiting for your spot. If it takes 20 minutes, there's either going to be a backup of cars x 4, or they need to install 4 x the number of extension cords to the socket. The logistics will be interesting. Maybe the charging at home and work will offset the issue.

I think that there will be a lot less visitors to petrol stations so the size will be adequate. that is why it is important to get more from each customer.

And McDonalds are already attached to many service stations.

Maybe a Thai massage parlour installed as well just for a quickie.

Given a large portion of EV's will be charged at a home or business, the overall use of "petrol stations" will drop so far as selling fuel for vehicles is concerned.

Also a change in the demographic using them since the need for fast charging is more associated with people on road trips or a long way from home and less common for commuters on their way to work. So it changes the nature of the customers as well.

Interesting range of views, and a rather dynamic set of factors at play ...

Coles sold because they couldn't make it work/ didn't meet their notion of return on investment.. ..
OTR looks more like succession planning. Don't know about Liberty.

Or it just becomes a property play like McDonalds

Don't hold

Maybe they become obsolete once batteries are rapid charging and last for days. Even for freight trucking and shipping. All depends on how quick the battery technology develops.

got a few legs left, I'd reckon.

Viva Energy was sold down 7 per cent today, for its worst daily drop in a year, after reports emerged that Swiss-based Vitol was considering selling its Viva stake in a $500 million minimum block trade.

Insider Selling Creates a Buying Opportunity for Viva Energy (ASX: VEA)

i do not hold this share

i am not interested in buying this as there is a dedicated push away from fossil fuels , and i also see increased pressure on the retailer and retail customer

but those with shorter term goals may find opportunity

Sold 1/2 my WPR(the REIT that owns most of VEA's property) and bought VEA yesterday

Some points -
  • Government support through the Fuel Security Services Payment, which supports the Geelong refinery in bad times.
  • Growth with overhead savings via its acquisitions of Coles Express and On the Run(OTR) . My local OTR's look to be doing well after the rebranding.
  • Refinery upgrades complete.

There is also a potential gas terminal at Geelong for the importation of Gas, go Victoria!
Looking for recent capital expenditures to result in increased profit.
