The US election has left me disengaged and disenchanted with the whole electoral system and what may become of ours here in Australia. The disgustingly excessive monetary campaign, the armies of volunteers, the sickening rhetoric spewing forth day after day, week after week.
It made me long for the Australian political process where we don't fawn over our leaders and as a general rule are much more questioning and sceptical.
Never before in history has the personal agenda of the President meant so little, and never before in history has the public scrutiny of a US President been so great. The result of this? A vote for style before substance on a scale never seen before. Both political parties are the same.
I have read people like GG and Green going hammer and tongs on here as if they are baracking for Collingwood over Carlton. It may as well have been for all the policies that were discussed. Everyone says Obama stands for "Change". Who the hell knows what that means?
I believe that Obama is a truely genuine politician who believes he can make a difference. I also believe that McCain is a very decent human being who would have given his all as President. So did it really matter who won?
You bet it did!!! Obama has the style that the public loved, wanted and ultimately chose. That is not to say the alternative was substance(McCain). He was the Republican choice for "style" along with Palin. That's the point. You can officially mark 2008 as being the year Political substance died in the US. I hope Obama can prove me wrong.
I can't wait for our next election, which hopefully will be done and dusted within a 6-8 week period, be full of treasury costings and none of the razza dazzle of the US that we've been subjected to over the past 18 months.
