Makes you wonder why the US even bother.

Whenever there is a disaster in the world, which country can be relied up to send one of the largest contingents of troops, aid workers, medicos, water , food, etc???....yes the good old USA. I don't care whether it is Bush, Clinton, Obama....the US just help.

Yet already the knockers (from afar) have come out and complained about:

a) Lack of coordinated aid efforts
b) Lack of medical attention, water and food
c) The delay in Obama contacting the Haiti government,

and in the process directing the shots over the bow of the US.

The conditions over there must be an absolute nightmare - I understand that.

In times of trouble around the world, I'd rather be relying on the US, over China, Russia, France, Germany, India, Brazil, Japan and all the other so-called superpowers. Yet the left wing, anti-capitalist, commo, tree-huggers don't ever complain about the single Soviet bomber being sent, but rather focus on failings of the US.

And don't give me the old chestnut about "per head of population". The people in Haiti don't care about "pound for pound" they just want help.

Duckman

I understand Cuba has given permission for US aircraft bound for Haiti to overfly Cuban airspace, so in that case at least the left wing, anti-capitalist, tree-hugging (?) commos are being unobstructive.

It ain't much I know, but credit where credit's due ...

Disclaimer: I am a tree hugger.

You're not wrong. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Whilst they do make mistakes and do some silly things at times, overall I think they're a very good people. One of the most giving nations, if not the most given.

Unfortunately the Yanks don't do Disaster relief or War on the ground very well.

Look at the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina experience, or Vietnam, Iraq.

When it comes to high tech, volunteerism or good deeds, you can't beat them, and I think they are a great Nation.

They are a great people but many of the functionaries who are at the pointy end are the dregs of their education system.

They should let the Aussies run the show in Haiti.

Yep, send General Cosgrove over there. He'd soon sort it out.
But seriously, I doubt any nation would be seen to be very successful right now, given the utter devastation.

When we consider Haiti's bloody history, you maybe start to wonder about the voodoo they have long practised.

I'd agree Julia,

It is an extremely dysfunctional society, fubar really.

I still feel sorry for them though.

Im curious to understand that they said its too hard to get food and water in many places and people are starving but i though food/water drops from the air was always a solution when access is tough?

The only problem with that thow is local militia are taking over as there is basically no security on the ground.

Tough times indeed.

there was hardly enough food there in any case ageo, the country has for years been facing the severe hardships of the general populace not having the basics needed, so water itself was not something that everyone had in any case, and food, that one was always a problem

i remember a while back seeing how hiatians were eating mud patties, and that was i believe even before of just after those two hurricanes.. i recall a sickening doco a while back about the desperate times of the locals and how the president had zero cred.. its one of the poorest places on the planet.. seriously lacking in anything, so having what was next to nothing destroyed is catastrophic. when the UN says this is the biggest humanitarian disaster in decades, they are not understating..

what is inevitable is anarchy, and its normal human behaviour.. the arrival of marines in numbers is totally needed, and wont be able to do much more than secure vital services, the place will be a sad sad disaster for those who lived, its really not a bright future here,, tones of somalia here..

i suspect the world will have a hard time accepting what is about to unfold, but imho there is little anyone can do..
