Its great to see fine technology for its time up and running and not rusting away in a paddock somewhere.

Well done Mr Burns for sharing this and well done to the restorers.

Myself and Mrs Trawler, love train travel, second only to cruising.

Cruising is a very pleasant way to holiday...

It certainly is, you can visit places and get a fleeting glimpse to wet or dampen you appetite, while travelling to destinations you wish to visit.

I hate air travel (replaced knees and hip) cramped poxy box, with people sneezing, snorting, farting and overflowing into your space.

I've found if you plan the trip, the travel can be a big part of the holiday, cruising from Australia to U.K at $100/day isn't expensive.

Then travel by train through Europe, to Rome, fly back through Dubia = magic.

Where do you usually cruise? GF and I have different opinions on what is a relaxing holiday. I was thinking of a cruise in Alaska (I got told Antarctica was out!) with a few day excursions. Have you been there?

No I haven't been to Alaska(inland passage) but have many mates that have. They all loved it, most say don't include the scenic Rockies train trip in it.lol
Apparently the views are much better on the roads above.

I tend to think of a place, that I really don't want to actually fly to, and spend heaps of hassle travelling around.

Then find a cheap last minute cruise that includes it. e.g Freo to Southampton around Africa.
Never wanted to go to Africa, but the places we visited were interesting.( No, I wouldn't go back)

Done Asia to death, been all over and around Australia.

Next cruise either around Japan, 14 - 20 days, from - to Hong Kong.

Or U.K to Australia around South America.

Yeah the train rides look pretty nice, but I just worry I'll be bored sh!tless after a few days. I usually do more active sort of holidaying (cycling trips/hiking etc). Basically, I like exploring my own way. It does look very beautiful, but I think I'd rather go walking or kayaking around than be sitting with a bunch of old timers having the lunch buffett. No offence of course.

Now that's brave! Do big cruise ships go round the Cape or they use the Straits of Magellan?

I understand where you're coming from, but it is really hard to kayak from Freo to Southampton.
I do think you have to be a bit carefull and research the cruises, to suit your interests.
We have found the American cruise ships, aren't to our liking.

The U.K based ships seem to suit us better. Give me a P.M for more detail.

With regard being bored $hitless, both my wife and I are fairly fit people, and don't find them boring.
However we do go to the gym at least twice a day, you just have to see the cabin staff, and explain you want the towels replaced twice daily.

We've found the U.K based cruise lines, are more geared up to facilitating our interests, i.e we are not interested in sitting around a pool all day, drinking.

I'm sure they do, the debate is whether to do the Panama or travel around the Cape, both would be interesting.

However a cruise around South America, would give much more of an insight.

On the subject of trains, a mate hand built this from schematics, took him a long time, but he is an amazing fitter/ machinist and an unbelievably good tradesman.
To scale steam locamotive, can haul upto about 100 people.
