The ASX has narrowly avoided the need to delay or cancel trading on Monday after engineers working through the weekend to resolve serious issues with its critical settlements processing system.

The faults were discovered on Friday and meant that trades made earlier in the week could not be settled, leaving brokers scrambling to find billions of dollars to cover the transactions that could not be finalised.

Late on Sunday, the market operator held a call for market participants to explain the issue. Trades made from Wednesday will now be processed on Monday, it said, adding that it expected the market to open as normal.

The S&P/ASX 200 closed 19.3 points higher, up 0.24%.

ASX futures were up 20 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 8218 at 7.49am AEDT on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 10 points, or less than 0.1 per cent, as of 3.20pm Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite was up 0.1 per cent. Trading volume was lighter than usual as US markets reopened after the Christmas holiday.
