The completely useless irrelevant thread

planes landing at Hong Kong's old Kai Tak airport could only do a visual landing, and not use instruments, as a hard right turn* was needed and pilots could not use the onboard ILS.

* a low-altitude (sub-600 ft; 180 m) 47-degree right-hand turn, ending with a short final approach and touchdown.

It was terrifying

Back to reality now the Race is over.
Received a letter from the ATO asking why our 22/23 taxation has not been submitted.
A bit odd as they paid us a refund back in May of this year!!!!

Mohair is a high-end, luxury wool that comes from the Angora goat.

Angora wool comes from the Angora rabbit

... Something completely obscure for those on ASF. The white line on a horse's hoof is not white, it's yellow.

Once more, what is universally referred to as the live sole plane is epidermal sole and therefore non-living.

i.e. dead sole

What is called the knee on the horse is the carpus and what we call the wrist on almost every other animal including humans.

Just thought you should all know that

Even an anvil has anthropomorphic (or animal) names.... Beak, face, waist, heel etc.

Been looking for an anvil at farm clearing sales.
They go for ridiculous prices these days.
More valuable than silver.

It's obscene.

Blame "Forged in Fire" on TV. Everybody fancies themselves as an amateur/artistic blacksmith these days.

15 years ago you could have pick up a 250 pound anvil for about 150 bucks.

I traded a 300 pound anvil for two horses shod back then. It needed a little bit of refurbishment but an absolute bargain. Stupidly I left it in New Zealand when I was working over there, the damn thing would be worth about three and a half thousand now.

The funniest thing is that you can often buy a brand new anvil for less than the price of a second hand anvil if you know where to get them.... And you can get some quite reasonable (for amateur work) anvils from China very cheap.

My everyday travel anvil is 45kg O'Dwyer I bought new for about 700 dollars 12 years ago, but I also have a 30 kg Chinese anvil which I bought for 165 dollars a couple of years ago. It's quite fine and I can do almost everything on it but just that little bit of extra weight is good.

My shop anvil is a 95 kg near new O'Dwyer I stole for $900 about five years ago... But literally had to fight off other guys trying to buy it.

New anvils FWIW

The Collier 200lb is the Rolls Royce FWIW, but at $4,600 it 'spensive and the O'Dwyer at $2,600will do everything you need. Just don't miss your work otherwise you'll dent the face. ;)

Smaller anvils of course are substantially cheaper.
