Speech pepperisms that bug you

Period.

I haaaaaate that. Someone argues with you... yadda yadda blahh blahh and then thinks they can end all the argument saying "period".

Well in Australia it is FULL STOP not period!
I usually repond with the counter argument and end it with "exclamation mark". Usually get a baffled look :p:.

"Gob-smacked" - anyone using this phrase SHOULD be smacked in the gob!

"Gotten" - no, you've either got ir or you haven't!

"Think outside the square" - no, it's think outside the DOTS! (The nine dots that make up the square were there before they were joined to make the square! Just like the egg; or was that the chicken?) Anyway.....
:)

I have found this thread very interesting because it has made me think. I happily posted some of the cliches and expressions that annoy me........... and then reading what annoys other people, found included in the list a few things I say myself!

We could probably all learn to watch our words more carefully!

I hate this too.

This is yet another Americanism that has found its way into too many Australian vocabularies, along with speakers putting the stress on initial syllables, e.g. "REEpeat".

"Literally", when the speaker is clearly using hyperbole.
