Hey Joe... Here's an idea... Maybe the original author of the thread can decide to lock or delete a thread when they please...

Does that not defeat the purpose of a forum??????

No, closing or deleting threads is at the discretion of myself or the moderators otherwise this place would have threads disappearing left, right and centre.

I have closed the odd thread because the debate was framed around someone's particular circumstances but that is the exception rather than the rule.

If someone doesn't want a thread to stay on the forums permanently, I would advise them not to start it in the first place. :)

no, leave them unlimited...
but maybe they need to be cleaned up from non relevant, more converstational type posts...

but then again, whose going to have the time to do it...

I am happy to volunteer to do it on say one thread.... eg. BMN...

is this something you might consider?

Then it becomes a subjective decision as to what's relevant and what's not. I would prefer the thread remain intact.

well, thats true...
whats common sense for one, may not be for another...

i would say that all posts, over say two weeks old that do not add value...
i.e. not fundamental analysis or technical analysis, should be deleted.

however, if this is not agreeable, then i would rather all the posts be retained in an unlimited length thread.

Joe,

Unusual, it says -you already voted- , and I even did not open the page before.

Happy, this thread is two years old. You probably voted a long time ago and forgot about it.

I know this an old thread, but I reckon that threads should not be capped in size. Its easier to follow the one thread from start to end.

Im with the masses on this, no capping (bit like inl hahahahahaahha) (sorry old joke!)

Reasons for not capping:

1) Logical flow of ideas from inception of thread to finish

2) Helps forum newbies get a hang of ASF's culture (I was one!)

3) Helps guests decide whether ASF is their kinda place (ditto)

The last 2 points help especially to discourage would-be rampers to downgrade ASF to the level of the other forums.

I can see the flaws in limiting the length of a thread, but could the length of a post be limited?

Post lengths are currently limited to 10,000 characters, although this can be modified to any value at any time if required.

I think one thing that would help limit thread and post length (in terms of total number of lines) is not quoting back complete messages but just the relevant bit of text. It's a waste of space quoting back a whole 50 line message just to write "Exactly!" after it.

Unfortunately the "Quote" button makes this all too easy. Could that button perhaps be changed to just give the opening and closing quote tags but no text? Then an explicit copy of the desired text would have to be made.

Oh, no, please don't change the way it is at present.
It took me ages to learn how to bring up the whole quote and then just reply to the appropriate sections using the typed in tags.

I do agree, though, with what you say, GP about how silly and unnecessary it is to post the full quote of a long post with a minimal and often fairly meaningless comment.
