Woman charged over mother's death

A Melbourne woman allowed her mother to be eaten alive by maggots and left her dying on a floor surrounded by her own waste, a court has heard.

Kateryna Pyrczak's St Albans house allegedly smelt like a "rotting corpse" when she was discovered by paramedics lying on her kitchen floor with gangrenous legs on November 10 last year.

Police allege the 72-year-old's right leg was gangrenous from knee to foot and was being eaten by maggots and her body was covered in ulcers.

Ms Pyrczak was rushed to the Western General Hospital but died from multiple organ failure and septicemia later that night.

The case has shocked medical professionals, reducing nurses to tears.

On Friday, her daughter and sole carer Mary Eve Pyrczak, 49, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates' Court charged with negligently killing her mother.

Pyrczak allegedly told police she did not call an ambulance because she feared it would cost her $800.

re shocking news, just read a nz paper, ie stuff or nz herald. rediculous sad news all the time
just last week it had the vic uni stud ass confirming they have declined to put a wreath on the memorial on anzac day as they believed it promoted war...sad but typical of the wordy minority in nz. im glad im out, but parents r left to suffer.

My guess is the daughter is simple, she didn't call an ambulance because it might cost $880 or something like that.

I also imagine they lived in the house as recluses for many years, probably migrants.

12 year-old to be sentenced for rape

A 12-year-old boy who raped a young child will be sentenced after failing to convince a court he was wrongly convicted.

The boy - who cannot be named - was found guilty of rape and attempted rape at the end of a judge-only trial in the Children's Court at Townsville earlier this year.

During the trial, the court was told the boy raped a four-year-old boy in May 2007, and tried to rape his own three-year-old brother a short time later.

The boy told his father he had raped the child because he was "horny", it was revealed at the trial.

Under Queensland law anyone under 14 years cannot be held criminally responsible for an offence unless it can be shown they had the capacity to know they ought not have done the act.

The trial judge found the boy did have the capacity to know he should not have committed the offences.

The boy's lawyers took the case to the Court of Appeal in Brisbane in May in an attempt to have the conviction quashed.

They argued that the guilty verdict was "unreasonable" and "against the weight of the evidence".

They also argued the trial judge gave insufficient weight to the evidence of a psychiatrist called by the defence.

The Court of Appeal in Brisbane on Friday dismissed the application, finding that the trial judge correctly ruled the boy knew that what he was doing was wrong.

The boy will now be sentenced for the two sexual offences.

Wasn't there something on the news the other night about a guy who's son was molested, so the guy bashed the offender and now will probably spend more time in jail than the offender.

From memory the molester was released with little penalty due to being bashed.

Its all a bit of a joke imo.

Indeed these crimes are disgusting and atrocious, but sadly i dont think they are unique to the 21st century. It may simply be, that with the rapid advancement of technology and media distribution systems, these stories are brought to our attention or rather the attentions of a wider audience. Irrespective of the time period, there will always be bogans and bogans will always do stupid things.
