School speed cameras

Disarray

You state that you are such a capable driver, what is your basis for this. Is it the fact that you have driven at high speeds on a city street and have judged yourself as such or a few mates in the back have said this.

Have you ever been to a skid pan, defensive driving course or a closed track situation all of which has recording devices that record reaction times, stopping distances, abilities in different circumstances which takes out the human perception of "I am great" and replaces it with hard data that cannot be fudged.

I have not yet left one of these situations without saying to myself I am now a better driver who better understands my abilities better. Even more so is the guys who come back from a week under these conditions who say " I thought I was a good driver, I realised i wasn't as good as I thought I was once I had been put through my paces, but I now realise my abilities under different conditions/situations".

This forumn won't change your attitude, I just hope that it is you killed/injured and not an innocent person near you when the inevitable happens and the statistics say it will happen.

Amazing isn't it? Last time I reviewed the metrics it was less than 7/10ths of a second between hitting a tree at 100 kph full on and death, ie blood spurting out of the mouth and heart ceasing due to shock. Doubling one's speed quadruples breaking distance. You cannot negate the physics, dissipation of kinetic energy is 1/2 mv2. Vehicles approaching each at 100 kph is a closing speed of 200 kph. Do the maths if someone approaching you at that velocity is tired, drunk, on ice or simply careless. Jim Richards nearly got totalled by a kangaroo and that was on a racing circuit with everyone going in the same direction. The X factor does it.

Spent enough time in an E&A Department thanks. Don't need another disarray to see me through a weekend.

Clearly speeding fines are objective... A study in the US showed that speeding is not the main contributing factor to accidents and in nearly all cases it is fatigue... Any body who believes that speeding fines from cameras are saving lives are naive... I will stand by my belief that unless you are notified immediately of your offence then it isn't a preventative... That is why I believe that a police car pulling you over is better than a camera... A fine in the mail is mixed up together with your bills... Its like another bill... What are bills for? A right to take money...

Again if fatigue is the main contributing factor then I guess the government is out of luck there because how do they fine somebody who is tired... They can't but they would if they could...

Speeding a little bit is harmless IMO if you judge correctly... as in driving 65 Ks on and empty 60 zone is much safer than 60 Ks on the same road when its congested and wet... Its interesting also how cops try to catch people on these empty and safe roads instead of the busy ones... Like I said speeding is objective and fines are nothing more than a grab for cash... If the government cared sooo much about working families and social values then they would have illegalized gambling again... But no the Government wants your money...

By the way I have never been caught speeding... Neither do I do it often... However I have been unjustly fined twice... One over car registration and the other parking... Both were excusable and I did contest them but there is always a hidden clause to leech money from the innocent...

Of course... its one of those laws of motion... double the velocity quadruple the energy (or in this case breaking distance)...

I had a road train coming head on with me after he lost control... both of us going 110 K's each... It scared the daylights out of me... and guess what the options were? go head on with the truck or throw the car in the ditch if he couldn't correct it in time and maybe miss a tree... just goes to show that even at normal speeds bad things can happen....

In the end of the truck episode the truck corrected and I slowed right down to 60K's and pulled over enough... Hitting a tree a 60K's would've hurt a lot...

i couldn't be bothered arguing with all of you so unless you have perfect driving records and follow every road rule and never drive over the speed limit then you are a hypocrite and you can keep your judgements to yourself.

i don't recall saying i am a god-like driver who goes hooning through playgrounds narrowly avoiding collision after collision, i merely stated that driving is a complex skill and like everything else in life people have different levels of ability. i happen to be good at driving (both racing and street driving) and say so which is getting up your noses for whatever reason i don't give a fig about.

so i would like to see licensing changed to reflect different levels of ability and a higher standard of driver training become the norm for road users, however i fully expect mediocrity to remain as the standard in both driver training and road rule application. you may now return to your armchair sermonising.

I don't recall anyone but you blowing your horn .... If I do happen to go over the limit , it's unintentional , not deliberate - like yourself - and correct my speed when I realise .. I also pay particular care around pedestrians , residential and school areas . Being a parent and seeing such flippant comments I have everyright to judge your comments - especially when you put yourself wayyyyy out there ....

i don't recall saying i am a god-like driver

Really ??

I do... Shall I remind you ?

i am a habitual speeder and comfortably negotiate traffic in excess of the speed limit, this is because i have good hand / eye co-ordination, drive according to the traffic conditions, fix my focus several hundered metres ahead and am able to accurately judge speed, direction and time. on the other hand the roads are filled with muppets who have no concept of using their mirrors, drive in whatever lane they feel like with no situational awareness and have lousy judgement.

and yet again ....

i happen to be good at driving (both racing and street driving) and say so which is getting up your noses for whatever reason i don't give a fig about.

....you may now return to your armchair sermonising.

Grow up .. .. You dish it out now take it ..

i am a professional driver of b-doubles/roadtrains & when i see cameras i

always back it off to about a bit more than 10kms under the limit of the sign,

so say the 70kmh zone there just before the horsley drive/meccano set

city bound i drop it down to just under 60 kms,its the best way as those

cameras may not be calibrated correctly, however even the best get pinged

when day dreaming south bound port macquarie 100kms in an 80kms sept

2006,double points OUCH!!which was a good reminder of pro drivers

responsibilities, what do i do now at port mac???i button off earlier sit up

get my head together set the cruise to 75kms,as a pro driver that goes

everywhere interstate on all roads, ive see plenty of so called good drivers

come to grief, with the holiday season upon us soon & the migration north

on the pacific hwy take extreme care, take your rests every 2 hours at the

revive survive stops, now with the 3 laners you get on the pacific if you get

a truck on your rear dont panic & speed up,all the driver is doing is making

sure he has enough room to go pass you,as these 3 laners were not built

for b-doubles so what happens alot is esecially p-platers who give you no

room to pass, yep i know there is a few drivers who you might feel intimdated

by,however the longer you get stuck behind an 80kms the more likely you

are to get booked for being over your 12 hour logbook limit,so thats why

you see trucks in a hurry, happy driving to all,tb

For those of us who do not have school age children and dont know whether it is a school day or not, the flashing signs are a must at ALL schools.
I spend my life behind the wheel and dont mind slowing down for schools, I would just like to be reminded when those times are.
I have picked up my fair share of speeding fines, as I do over 60,000k a year, but you soon learn how to use the cruise control, it works at 40kmh as well.

the cameras we are talking of is the variable type say 60kmh in a school zone

they can catch you out if you are not on the ball,i nearly got caught out

going thru murrirundi at the top of the hunter valley coming back from a run

out of goondiwindi, these cameras speed limits change when school hours

start & finish, you just have to be very alert to the signs & look for the words

variable speed limit, even if school is not on i dont trust them.here is the list

off the rta website for nsw, take it easy people & drive safely.also in victoria

they have no signs & they have point to point cameras on the way north at

kilmore,tb

Totally in agreement, Romano. The primary school where I help with transport does have those large signs which flash continuously during the time the lower speed limit is in force.

Definately a help to visitors in the area and saves checking the watch each time when passing through. Probably not as much revenue raised, but so much safer for the younger kids who can be easily distracted and forget to look...
