Religious beliefs impacting on medical treatment - Views?

Wake up , Religion for humanity has been disastrous.

With or without religion good people behave .
Bad people do evil.
But for good people to do evil things, that takes Religion !

O.K.

Hey folks, how about this for a concept:

God, but no religion.

If God even wanted to be worshipped, he would have been very succinct. The concept that MY way is the ONLY way is absurd.

If you were God, (ie without human foibles such as ego, hate, status etc) would you care how someone worshipped you if they were sincere? Would you even want to be worshipped? LOL I don't think so.

I can just imagine knocking on the pearly gates:

God: Hang on, not so fast buddy! You bowed, you did confession, you gave to the poor, etc etc. But you didn't sing the right hymn last Sunday! Not good enough! Now P!ss off!

You: But I never hurt a fly, I gave all my money to the church, I killed all those bloody Muslims in you name,... I never even swore my entire life!

God: Sorry! (Slams door in face)

I have one question. Do you not all love your children despite their faults? Of course you do.

I don't think God gives a rats. This is all about self realization folks.(IMO)

All else is BS

Wayne,

I do wish you well, remember this in a past post ;)

Piety without content You believe in religion more then what religion teaches.

The above is not relevant to you :)

Bob.

its fair to say, fanatically following anything is bad...
Jesus preached Love God and Love thy neighbour... Forgiveness and turn the other cheek! Not many Christians actually follow that philosophy... Certainly, I struggle... because its hard!

Ironically, the more moderate mainstream christian churches are becoming, the more and more people are flocking to the more 'fundamental' churches...

this trend is reflected also in rise of fundamentalist brances of other religions, judaism, islam, even hinduism...!

Quite amazing isn't it...
It looks like us humans need to hold onto some 'truths' with fervour.... and I use the term 'truths' rather loosely here...

If its not worth fighting and dying for.... then its obviously not worth it at all

m8, I was on a plane once - turns out that Cliff Richard was on the same plane. My friend said - "I'm off to say hello to CR" - he returned about 45 minutes later!! - saying "you want to get your ears nailed back and hear about the good word, just go say hi to Cliff." ;)
2. You gotta love that Buddhist mentaility. ;) "We know we gain strength from our religion, we have no problem with you finding strength from yours - Peace, tolerance, etc " Mind you, things have been gettin a bit messy in southern Thailand I believe.
3. dog ? lol - just don't call it Pastafarian - too long ;) mm Meatballs maybe lol?

4 BTW, I know a lady who's so religious that she refuses to do anything other than rest on her sabbath - so if a volunteer is needed to pick up someone from an airport on a Sunday for example (actually her sabbath is a different day, but the principle is the same), then she just "isn't available" to help . ;) lol - talk about off the rails.

As they say Rafa, "To die for a religion is to place a high price on conjecture".
Then again, I would exclude the nuns killed in Timor and elsewhere etc :(

Better not to get too "thingy" about any of it imho.
I don't think too many people have been put to the sword over their interest in Science - except for the Cultural Revolution in China, and the Killing Fields of course. o boy - time for a beer after those cheery thoughts.

Howdy Wayne, Just curious .... Does this mean you believe there is a God, or are you saying that religion is basically "screwed up" ...... just interested b4 I make any further comment. Cheers Barney.

PS 20/20, Enjoy that beer, I've got the weekend off, so I might have 1 or 5 myself !! :D

Blood transfusions - some religions don't let you etc.
another story ;) nothing to do with religion - just blood. In Pago Pago when I was there, there was no blood bank. So if they needed blood they'd ring the bar at the local hotel. And we'd go up and give blood. I remember once this top bird (no not topless lol) who used to be a very popular barmaid at the pub was having problems in childbirth - "anyone here blood group XYZ? " they'd say. anyway there was a queue of us to help. Don't ask me if they tested the blood - it was pretty much outta-me-inta-you as I recall - but she wouldn't have needed any laughing gas lol.

Hi Barney

It's not really important what I believe, I'm not here to "sell" my beliefs (Hope that doesn't come across as rude, just stating my position) But for the record, I do have my own concept of what I think "God" is.

But what I notice is that people tend to polarize to the extremes. Either they are fairly devout in some religious doctrine, or they are agnostic/atheist and argue vehemently for their "side".

I also see people reject the notion of God (or whatever name you want to use) as a by-product of rejecting religion... throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I think that's usually an emotional knee jerk.

I believe religions are purely human concoctions designed for various reasons and not truly representitive of God. Furthermore I don't believe it matters. As to what I think is truly representitive of God? Nothing... and everything! lol.

Cheers

Howdy Wayne, I couldn't agree more with you. I respect your "diplomatic" approach ....... Actually even though I don't know you from a bar of soap, I respect your opinions/humour etc a great deal (I like to read between the lines ;) )

I actually have a fairly "bent" version of a "God" concept myself (which may be totally different from yours or any one elses but that doesn't matter) I believe in a greater force/being/whatever than just man alone, and I personally have had too many instances in my life which verify "Gods" (not Religion!!!!!) existance for me, but my best friend is an agnostic/verging on atheist, so I'm pretty flexible ........... All the best .............. PS How are the flies over there now ... any better??? Barney.

1. yes m8, they say a gentleman always comes second.
2. you're right - lol - the best time I ever got in the City2surf was when i got stuck behind this girl in a hula shirt - was like watching two kids fighting under a blanket for 14 km lol.
3. Once a baron always a baron - once a night is enough you reckon ;)
LOL almost screwed that joke up bigtime

medical treatment ? religious beliefs? Only contribution I can think of is that the Amish don't even permit photos yes? imagine explaining to your teenage brat kids that they were once cute little darlings lol. - without the assistance of a family photo . (and I'm talking about professional photo - they're the only people that could make us all look the same way at the same instant lol)

the good stuff keeps coming, ....
what's evil to us is good to others and who decides what's good and what's evil????you? me?osama?bush maybe?where do you draw the line in the sand?and who gets to choose the stick?

your'e telling me if the whole world becomes Buddhist tomorrow people will stop fighting, I don't think so ;)

Not many ppl can or would claim to be pure & good, certainly not Osama or Bush or 99% of politicians in general.

If ppl simply accepted the idea that we are animals who can't grasp the true concept of GOD/ENLIGHTENMENT/(The Meaning of Life The Universe & Everything) ((it's = 42) ;), Hitch Hikers Guide to The Galaxy), then they would realise it is futile & stupid (infantile) to fight over religious beliefs. ;)

enlightenment (heaven)

Think you will find "enlightenment" in Buddhist terms is referring to an end of the rebirth cycle --- traditional heaven/hell can not exist in Buddhism unless you create it here for yourself.

cheers

Amish dont have photos - but my guess is that they permit Xrays?
In which case, yessss - been trying to get em on an inconsistency for yearss!! jokin.

PS Barney, as for my relationship with ladies, here's the facts m8 :-
http://humor.beecy.net/menwomen/mansong/
like, - lol - I'm like any other happily married aussie round here ;)
(this song is quite enlightening but only for non-buddhists, )

Thanks for your post as well Coyotte, must check it out again myself - why the heck would you want to END the rebirth cycle, - I'm looking forward to coming back as my dog ;) as a wedgetailed eagle maybe, but not sadly as a polar bear , no ice = no dice :( , Apologies for getting off the track yet again)
