I am not sure how much of this information reaches wider Australia, but I heard on the radio that the teenager who lost his leg to a shark attack in Esperence is Jehovah's witness and his beliefs are impacting on the treatment he can receive for his injury. The media portrayed this as life threatening (which may or may not be true) but I just find it difficult to believe that a person's religious belief about blood (before blood transfusions were even invented!) could result in their incomplete recovery, or death, or worse, the death of a child.

While there are products available that can substitute for blood, there are times when this wont do the job.

Now of course some people would die for their religious beliefs (or as I prefer, values) but still, to refuse treatment for a child? (although in this case I gather it is the teen refusing the treatment, although his belief is based on his family's teachings!)

Before people start getting carried away with their assumptions, I would like to say that these believes belong to Jehovah's witness NOT THE BIBLE.

THERE IS NOTHING IN THE BIBLE THAT SAYS DON'T GIVE A CHILD BLOOD IF THEY NEED TO.

Yep, I saw this and almost started a thread myself. LOL. Really, really, crazy stuff.

I must ask though, what is this belief based on? I am sure that at the time the JVs were establishing their doctrine that there was something sociocultural driving it.

My point is, it's not based on religion, but on the culture of the day.

NG, there's lots of stuff not in the bible that are 'Christain' values. JV is a Christian cult. Get over it.

Where is the logic in that Kennas? what makes something christian?

Thats exacatlly what they are BELIEFS - what we have been taught or learned from others --- how many can really claim to have had a genuine religious experience --- you would have to be a Christ , Bhudda ,etc to be able to claim any authority in this area .

At least medicain is a proven , repeatable science -- Nothing in Religion can be proven or repeated .

Used to believe in Santa as toddler

Cheers

Sorry for being a bit abrupt there NG. I have a hangover.

Welll, what do you think makes something Christian? Surely, all of the Christian based cults/sects are entitled to call themselves 'Christian'? Anything that sprung out of the Council of Nicea is based on the origin of Christainity - Christ.

Well, actually, it could be argued that this was just a political gathering of old people making up their own religion that was based on some Jew who was excecuted for being a shizophrenic calling himself the Son of God.

And, Christianity is just one of the Cults of Abraham. Believers in Yahwah, the God of War in the Elohim.

We digress....... My point is JVs are Christian and their Christain beliefs have led to them not allowing blood transfusions....Each of the Christian cults do some pretty weird stuff. Faith healing takes the cake!

Well, well Kennas you had a hangover and I had a sh!!ty couple of days, so there :D

I don't get offended at all if you say Jesus is a schizophrenic Jew, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. What gets to me is when people start inventing stuff and call it Christian. It's like me commenting on the pretty charts you post ;) I don't know what they are so I keep my mouth shut, I don't give my opinion or start telling you what they mean. The only thing I usually say to you is thank you for taking the time :)

You answered the question correctly ;) Christ makes something Christian and believe me when I say Christ didn't say don't give sick children blood if they need to or kill half a million people in Iraq or kick the Palestinians out of their land.

In regard to the Old Testament, I'd say find yourself a good Rabbi (who didn’t have a couple of sh!#ty days ;)), get one of your nice bottles of wine and have a discussion, I only go by what Jesus says, I kinda like what this schizo had to say 2000 years ago.

If all religions refused all treatments, this could fix the Medicare wows.

By the way we can vote on Nine MSN on Medicare supported dental service for pensioners and low income earners.

- But remember if you say yes and the Government implements vote it'll put even more pressure on struggling Medicare -

But Jehovahs believe in the bible, I've known quite a few. They also believe that the world is coming to an end tomorrow & Jesus is returning to save just those believers with just exactly the right beliefs. Of cause they keep putting the date back as we're still here just as various Christians have been believing ever since a few hours after Jesus body was put to rest. LOL, ROFL.
I saw on tele a couple of nights ago how "the church" tried to hush up the translation/findings of the Rosetta Stone because it indicated that the Egyptian civilization existed right through Noahs Floods. :D
Talk about constantly shifting the goal posts. ROFL

Now for something totally different,
Looking for a name for my new puppy, looking through lists of all the names of all the gods & I found a new RELIGION!!!

I am now a Pastafarian, look it up on Wikipedia & worship the god of spaghetti & meatballs. :D Trendy new religion only started in 2005. ;)

Here's the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster

Oh! & too add to shifting the goal posts,
The Earth isn't flat.
Men went to the moon & didn't bump into St Peter or any Pearly Gates on the way.
The Earth revolves around the Sun which is very unextraordinary.
The Universe started with a big bang billions of years ago.
Man is just another primate. (& makes a monkey of himself every day) :p:

Out too Soon,

Did I ever tell you before that I enjoy talking to you? ;)

yeh, yeh. Jehovahs can say what they like, it doesn't change Jesus' words. you should give it a try, read the sermon on the mountain, beautiful stuff. I don't pretend that i do all that is required, but i try and that's what matters at the end of the day.

name? how about new girl?????? i like it :D

ps what does ROFL stand for?

When it comes to religion no one knows what the correct answer is. We all believe in different things. There's no way of proving who's right or wrong.

No offence intended, but i simply don't understand how any rational, intelligent person can believe what is written in the bible or at least not question it. Fair enough I probably would have believed it if i was getting around a few hundred years ago, but not now in a world full of scientific explanations. It just staggers me how people believe it without any questions asked.

In regards to Jehova Witnesses, i feel sorry for the children who grow up with parents who are and don't get to celebrate Christmas. Absolute morons.

Reminds me of few years ago when that aussie yobbo invited two mormons into his house, gave them dope cookies, and they couldn't ride their bikes home...hehe

cheers

Sorry! ROFL means Rolling On the Floor Laughing. I didn't make it up.

I owned a fish & chip shop for a few years until recently & made freinds with a born again painter who when business was slow would debate with me for hours about how the end of the world was nigh, he was desperate to save my soul, I enjoyed his company, there was no animosity & I was like a red rag to a bull being a partial Buddhist (ex christian) with intelligent arguments.

If you like what he had to say you should check what Buddha said a few hundred years before. Very similar to Jesus, the biggest & most important difference being that unlike Jesus, Buddha said his way to enlightenment (heaven) was not necasarily the only way, just the way he had found, therefore he was being inclusive to every religion/ person who beleived in good over evil.
i.e Unlike most other religions- no wars/ fights over differences of faith. ;)

It's a boy, a german Shepherd, he's coming up from Brisbane next week, I've seen his picture & although I've looked up all these different names right from the start one name has stuck in my head, Ringo. as in the Beatle. I'll wait until I meet him before I name him but somehow I think Ringo's gonna stick. LOL :D

the good stuff keeps coming, it's good to be partial and ex and intelligent at the same time, makes life interesting, ROFL :D

enlightenment (heaven)
Mate, this word keeps poping in my face lately, first chops and now you. ROFL :D

was not necasarily the only way, just the way he had found, therefore he was being inclusive to every religion/ person
I'm glad he found a way at least he's not lost like most people are. the only prob i have with this is how can he include different religions when they're completely opposite? I mean someone says four wives and 70 harems in heaven and the other says only one??? would budah be happy with 36 say ;)

who beleived in good over evil.
what's evil to us is good to others and who decides what's good and what's evil????you? me?osama?bush maybe?where do you draw the line in the sand?and who gets to choose the stick?

i.e Unlike most other religions- no wars/ fights over differences of faith
your'e telling me if the whole world becomes Buddhist tomorrow people will stop fighting, I don't think so ;)

ps you can name your puppy NB, how about that?

Nah sorry can't help you out there New girl... i just stick to the beers myself :D

Hehe yeh would be great for a laugh tho..
