I don't really give a stuff what Oprah does, but would defend her right on her own privately produced show to air what she sees fit. If you were to make this assertion about the ABC here in Australia, then I would agree with you.
Btw she has apparently said that she will be happy to have Ms Palin on after the campaign is over.

I used to know a couple of people (slobs - my definition for ill-educated folk ... by a harsh generalization - usually ethnic car enthusiasts ) that blindly followed Labor. They didn't follow Labor because they understood the differences of government; but voted because it's what Unions wanted, voted because it's what their parents raised them to do, voted because they thought it was their best chance for a free-ride.

Uneducated people all slobs? That's a very judgemental remark, isn't it?
Many people haven't had the opportunity of much education. That doesn't mean they are stupid or without discernment.
I really hate generalisations, and this is what you are doing in a big way.

These are the sorts of folk that believe "compo" to be the holy-grail of employment; not a ripple of thought between those ears if you ask me. Whoever dangles the largest carrot gets their vote.

There's a reason shows like ACA/Today Tonight are so very popular - because they enable the followers to sit back in their lounges and believe they have some form of power. They're idiots; simple as that.

Know how many people use ACA as some sort of threat? It really is quite staggering - i.e. if someone isn't pleased with a service; "I'm going to A current affair with this!"

Well, I'd say for every person who actually watches this rubbish, there is another person who chooses to watch the ABC's 7.30 Report, or simply reads a book. I've probably watched ACA twice in 15 years.
Again, you are generalising unreasonably.

Power never actually changes, it's merely traded around between a select few. The whole George Bush fiasco should be evidence enough of that.

Sadly, I have to largely agree with this. But the great mass of people will only put up with rubbish for so long. Then they collectively ensure a change occurs. viz as a small example, the W.A. Labor govt not being returned to power. Looks like all sorts of coalition possibilities there which might be interesting.

I believe you're giving society too much credit Julia; we're unfortunately surrounded by idiots in this world.

OK, Nyden, if you say so. I just happen to believe that most people act pretty much as we expect them to. So if we inculcate into the population that they are all idiots, they will lose the will to behave responsibly.
Good to know that you at least know the right path.

I have actually been to Alaska and watched Oprah. Alaska was good, Oprah not so much. Don't understand the point though?

I never said capitalism was evil, and never meant to convey that. Capitalism has many benefits and is generally a good thing. But if that is your sole philosophy then your are pretty much soulless D) and that is no kind of society I want to live in.

While I thought an apology was a little OTT I did go back to try and attribute the quote of Nydens for you but the 20 mins had passed that you are graced with editing a post so unfortunately I could not.

I gather from your posts that you are just as superior as I (apparently) am. Who are the faithful to believe?

I did say uneducated ethnic car enthusiasts - to which I was referring to a stereotypical culture of people. Such an image is supported and boasted by popular culture; and the individuals themselves. You only need to look at television shows such as "Pizza" (I don't know if this show is still televised) to see this. This really was meant to be taken as a bit of humour

The term slob is quite a bit of tongue and cheek, and I do of course apologize if offence has been taken. Many people in my family are not well-educated, and many of them vote Labor - but these are hard working and responsible people; and not the people I was referring to.

I am referring to people that live on the dole, who spend their days doing "burn-outs" and upgrading their cars instead of saving money.

Lastly, these people were not friends - I can promise you that.

Oh, and the fact that many people blindly vote Liberal merely reinforces my view of lack of independent thought

Is it really so wrong to call these people on their beliefs and "values"? Especially when their behaviour is detrimental to society and the community at large. Whilst growing up I lived in an area which had many of these sorts; and I had to put up with car-screeching noises at 1am, neighbours cars being egged, garden gnomes being stolen, bus stops being destroyed, and the list goes on.

... I guess I can see the judgemental tone in my words. The inflictions of a traumatic childhood I suppose These sorts of people just really anger me, don't really know why either

Nyden, for some reason I find the "garden gnomes being stolen" really funny!
Just seems a bit incongruous that the sort of people who'd indulge in the other behaviours you've described, would be attracted to garden gnomes.
Or maybe they don't take them with the aim of offering them pride of place in their own gardens, but rather just another version of vandalism.

Roll forward to 2008 and McCain takes over the republican mantle. However, several inches of makeup cannot disguise the fact that the old soldier has already faded away rather more than republicans will admit. Some fresh young blood was needed as a counterbalance, so a suitably vigorous running mate had to be found. Once again, the good ol' powerbrokers have selected a nobrains and this time they got a bigmouth who even brags about being a pitbull. Her intellectual powers are so weak that so far she hasn't been allowed off the leash to do a single non-scripted interview.

Think about it. A smalltown American pitbull, a self-righteous puppet who is practically oblivious to world affairs, could soon be half a heartbeat away from wielding absolute control over the most powerful military machine in history. The cobwebs have been shaken away from the doomsday clock and it has started ticking again. The price of gold should be going through the roof.

You can be certain there will be absolutely no unscripted interviews with any interviewers such as Oprah who might open peoples' eyes.

Heh, no - I actually do not watch the programme! I used to watch it many many years ago - and the image is actually from a much older episode ... 7 to 10 years ago I believe. Something about the image just cracks me up; a bit of a reference to how the average man thinks! That wealth delivers absolute god-like power.

Something not so funny, is that they would also steal Christmas ornaments and decorations around the holidays. We always had a fantastic array of decorations, and the neighbourhood children would love to come see it all at night. One morning, one of the life-size glowing Santa statues was suddenly gone! Stealing a decoration on Christmas ... no shame, honestly.

Nyden, I'm sorry if I seemed unsympathetic. I've just always been a bit puzzled by the garden gnomes thing. To the point, actually, where I think they are so awful they are cute if you can get what I mean.

I doubt if it can be extrapolated to leadership qualities.

Obama was a professor and he is making a very poor job of running the US.
