Oz is backward because it respects its flag?
I'm fairly proud of the nation's roots, so I have no problem displaying that pride on the flag.
It would be more appropriate these days to have the stars and stripes on our flag. How would that go down with the public ?
a staled réchauffé of the British flag, with no artistic virtue, no national significance... Minds move slowly: and Australia is still Britain's little boy. What more natural than that he should accept his father's cut-down garments, – lacking the power to protest, and only dimly realising his will. That bastard flag is a true symbol of the bastard state of Australian opinion.
I've always wondered how people can be proud about about something over which they have no control.
Pride comes from personal or national achievement, not a historical quirk.
Well I'm proud of my forefathers, not so much as achievement, but because I am being and have provenance.
I don't think that is the case. Having the flag of another country on our flag when we are an independent nation is a sign of submission, not respect.
We are independently governed, but we are no less part of the commonwealth.
Upon enlisting our soldiers, sailors and airmen swear an oath to the Queen, not to Australia or the government of Australia. Our Air Force is the "RAAF" Royal Australian Air Force, not the "AAF", and our ships are "HMAS" Her Magesties Australian Ships, not AS.

What's that got to do with the Flag ? should we change it or not ?
As is New Zealand. Doesn't change a thing.
Exactly, so why bother.
seems like changing the flag it just like adding a coat of paint over rotten timber, it might look a bit better, but nothing has really changed, it's just cosmetic.

Umm...that would be the Queen of Australia.
What's the Commonwealth got to do with anything, the majority of countries in it are republics.
I don't think it is "just" cosmetic, it's the start of a process to be recognised on our own merits, not as part of a foreign country. It may seem a small change but a lot of people don't like the image of subservience that having the Union Jack on our flag implies.
My point is that the word Australia doesn't even get mentioned in the oath, oath is sworn to the queen and her successors, who it is not a coincidence happen to be part of the British monarchy, and are not Australians.
if we wanted to change the flag as a symbol of our independence, maybe we should start by making the head of state an Australian, and have our defence swear to protect Australia rather than defend the queen and her enemies.
