Metastock Moving Average Problems

Hello,

I have just installed Metastock and i am having a problem that i can not for the life of me resolve.

I trade Forex and i use both 10 and 20 period Exponential Moving Averages in my trading plan. I have plotted these on my charts using drag and drop from Indicator list. But then when i go to use the Exporer function so i can get a report with the values of these two variables in it that i can cut and paste to Excel, the values produced by the Moving Average function in the Exploration for these two variables are totally different to what the values of the same variables are when plotted on chart.

I have checked all the obvious things, i.e. making sure that the moving averages both on the chart and in the Exploration etc are both Exponential, both calculating values on Daily Charts, are the same number of days etc.

I am lost. Is there something i am missing that anybody on here knows about?

Hi Westcoast

I have MS version 9 so if all is the same then try the following:-

Click on the "Options" tab in The Explorer Window and make sure the
Load Records button is selected and then set the Load Records to 15000.

If you have any further questions it might be as well to advise which version you have as version 15 of MS has just been released.

Enjoy the journey.

Cheers, rnr

Hey

Thanks for replying

I don't have that many records. I have a years worth of data so about 250 - 300 records on a daily chart. Do you think that that is what the problem is?

I am using Metastock 10.1

Ideally you should load the same number of records into an exploration as the number of records on a daily chart.

However, having said that, if you set load 10,000 records into your charts & explorations, even though you don't have that many records MS would only load the number of records available.
The benefit of using a larger number of records means you don't have to keep adjusting those figures as the amount of data grows.

The reason the loaded records should be the same is covered below.

"The Exponential Moving Average is a staple of technical analysis and is used in countless technical indicators. In a Simple Moving Average, each value in the time period carries equal weight, and values outside of the time period are not included in the average. However, the Exponential Moving Average is a cumulative calculation, including all data. Past values have a diminishing contribution to the average, while more recent values have a greater contribution. This method allows the moving average to be more responsive to changes in the data."
