You sum up "our culture" as "rejection of authority"?! Not sure any state could be run on that idea.
Absolutely, covid proved Australians accept authority without question.
To be told you have to accept a vaccine, or be sacked, is beyond the pale.
Yet it was done.

The practicality is in trying to change the system. It's been tried once and failed and I can't see a great civil uprising for change.

Why spend another half billion unless there is certainty that it's going to get through?

More good money after bad.
And.... would it change anything in practical terms? Our system seems to function relatively well. We can look at existing republics, USA, France and many others.

Does their system function any better?

Nup.

The possibility is there that some Republican model here in Oz could function significantly worse. Any republican model put forth would most certainly be beholden to certain interests. IOW, we would be foolish to trust any change to be in the hands of the current Republican movement as their views are absolutely ideological rather than pragmatic.

To be sure I am absolutely a non-fan of Charles III, and not even William. I think they are both possessed on certain ideological fronts and have taken a step too far into politics and other Fields stay on that qualified to comment on.

But equally can we imagine one or another party apparatchik as El Presidente of our little banana republic?
