Although, I suspect Julia's ego is prepared to see the party loose rather than let Rudd have another go. Ironically though I think Rudd could make a successful comeback sooner if Julia lost the election as opposed to trying to toss her again.


Is it possible the territory would rebell and labor loose it's senator there?

In a November 2000 story in the Sydney Morning Herald entitled "The ALP ‘pet ******’ with no place to go", "Tracker" Tilmouth, an Alice Springs man who was the federal party’s pick to replace Collins in 1998, slammed the "weekend warriors" of the NT party.

"For the last 20 years we’ve all voted Labor," the SMH article quoted Tilmouth as saying. "They just expected us to vote Labor. It’s a plantation mentality."

Collins opposed Tilmouth’s nomination, as did the "Darwin end" of the NT Labor party. He withdrew from the race. "Some in Federal Labor bitterly regretted the party’s lost chance to get its first black face into the national parliament," the SMH reported.

In the same article, Snowdon was asked whether he was "keen to see a Territory Aboriginal politician in Canberra?" He thought it was inevitable, but he wouldn’t support Tilmouth. "People needed to understand the legitimate political aspirations of Aboriginal contenders," the article paraphrased him as saying.

He was less enthused when it came to the prospect of giving up his seat for an Aboriginal contender: "Snowdon all but choked," the story continued.

"My time’s not up," he said. "I don’t intend stepping aside for anyone at this point. But there will be a time when I won’t be contesting, and I’ll be happy to endorse an appropriate person at that time."

There is a contest between ALP factions in the NT, and throughout Australia.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

The usual ABC and ALP suspects such as Mark Colvin and Craig Emerson are strangely silent in their typhoid like voluminous output on Twitter.

Read matilda.com and subscribe if you are a leftie. They deserve to survive. Not afraid to upset the Louis Quinzes of the ALP.

Talking of which, what happened at ICAC today?

I doubt though, just getting back to topic, that Julia Goes to Peris is the answer.

I can see why Julia decide to simply demand Nova Peris is a Senate candidate.

As GG pointed out the Labour machine hasn't go a great record in securing quality indigenous candidates.

IFTEEN years ago, Kim Beazley decided it was high time an indigenous Australian represented the country's oldest political party in Federal Parliament. The then Labor leader flew to Broome and put his case directly to Patrick Dodson, at the time Australia's most respected and highest-profile Aboriginal leader.

The catalyst was the decision by Bob Collins, who had been a minister in the Hawke and Keating governments, to vacate his Senate seat in the Northern Territory. Dodson took the approach seriously enough to talk it through with those whose judgment he respected in the Kimberley before politely declining Beazley's invitation.

He had two main reasons: feedback from indigenous people in Darwin with long-term Labor connections that he would face local opposition (even though Dodson had lived in the territory for two decades before moving to Broome) and the prospect of a battle with Trish Crossin, a former teacher and industrial officer who had the backing of local unions to win the preselection.

Dodson wasn't the only indigenous contender to succeed Collins in the Senate. After he withdrew, Tracker Tilmouth, a fearless and articulate local, had the backing of prominent MPs, including the party's spokesman on Aboriginal affairs, Daryl Melham, as well as Labor's then national secretary, Gary Gray (now Julia Gillard's Special Minister of State).

* took fellow hockey team members on a fishing trip to Bathurst Island (Charters, exclusive lodge accommodation) and charged it to the NT Government
* is an arrogant bitch with expectations of living off the public purse.

Yep.

If they had have appointed Scrymgour, nothing would have been said. It would have been lauded as a good appointment.

But she is a free mind.

Nova has made a motza out of the Feds and the NT government with the stronger futures stuff. Much like that lunatic Bess Price.

Nova has made enemies every where she goes. This will be no different.
