Hi Folks

Today was the first time i've ever gone up to my internet usage limit of 8gb a month, i've been off work a bit lately so i've been using the internet at home..

It seems weird to me that i've used so much internet in 11 days.. And am thinking it might have something to do with data feeds.

Does anyone know how much data IB pulls in a typical day? Lets say 5 tickers going from 9:50 to 4:30. Also i have Ninja Trader and Amibroker running but im not sure they use much or even any internet.. I also have Quote Tracker Running with maybe 5-6 tickers coming from CommSec too....

If anyone knows an approximate amount of data that i'd be using a day from these 4 programs i'd appreciate it, as i may have to consider changing internet plans.

Cheers
Brad

It's just text that you're downloading, so it shouldn't be more than a 10MB a day...
You said you took some time off of work and that you're at home... perhaps you have more time to yourself and you're using your downloads on other things...

Just test it one day, have all the stuff you usually have on and don't download anything extra and check what your usage was for that day on your net account.

Trading data isn't demanding. Have you been watching videos? I'm guessing a few youtube clips use up more than a day's worth of trading data ;). I'm at 20gb for the month, and I'd be surprised if more than 5-10% of that was trading data.

I doubt trading platforms are that data intensive. Before i had 3G backup, dial up
was capable of running Iress and TWS with a full complement of lines when the cable packed up, (obviously slower but it still worked).

8 gigs in 11 days is pretty substantial...fair chance your ISP has made a blunder, ether that
or your downloading 2 movies a day, have a look at your usage from last month and compare.

As data usage goes, using Quote Tracker with Commsec is huge. Depending on your update frequency, over 100MB a day is not unbelievable.

Thanks Guys, I might give them a call. I do watch YouTube videos but not many!

Seriously?

Last night i used another 50mb of data just looking at ASF and being on MSN.. something weird is going on....

Cheers
Brad :)

you can use up to and over 300mb a day with a few trading programs running. IB seems to chew through mb as well. I have used about 60mb in an hour so far from IB sitting in the background, and surfing a few news related sites.

Commsec is inefficient. It's been a while since I used it, but I think I had 12-20 stocks, 60 second intervals and I'd go through 300-400MB/day
I changed feed to Westpac. Dropped it back to double digits.

Or the kid next door has worked out how to steal your wireless..... if its feasible its worth checking the MAC address of connected computers from time to time..

lol and he's downloading a heap of pr0n with it:p:

Most ISP's let you look at a breakdown of how much data you use (eg. per day), log on to your account and have a look around. Depending on what you are doing, 8GB isn't much. I have a limit of 50GB per month. It's enough for me, but wouldn't last 2 weeks for my little brother.
