If I'm in another country on a student visa, or other more temporary visa, will I be able to use the IB margin account? If I prove I am living there?

I'm going to be over in Europe for a year to maybe a few years, but am not an EU citizen or anything, and am hoping I can get access to IBs cheaper margin interest rates.

Why don't you call IB?
Personally I would think that as your an Aussi Citizen you would be subject to IB's policy
With regard to AUST.

I was a non resident for tax purposes and still lost my margin account when everyone else did.....fwiw

Thanks for the responses - Ill call them and confirm, and report back. Was just looking to see if anyone had had similar situations, and ways to get around it.

If it doesnt work, I guess ill check out the public company route, if it's something I decide I really want access to.

Anyone else using the IB phone app.

Love it!

Great alerts
1 level of buy sell
Conditional buys
Some great searches on live data.
Simple to use.

Hello guys. I have a number of questions that I could not fond answers to on IB's website. I'm hoping existing users can help me.

1. Is you cash deposit guaranteed up to the 250k?
2. What interest are you getting paid on your cash?
3. What ongoing account management fees are you paying?
4. I trade pretty frequently and need live data. Is there a fee for that?
5. I use lots of limit orders. Can you do the following for example:
* Say you want to buy CBA and it closed at $82 today. Tomorrow I want to place a limit order for say $80 but only transmit the order if it trades at $81.
* The very important thing for me is that placing this conditional limit order doesn't tie up capital.
* So, can I place say $1,000,000 in conditional limit orders (none are actually in the market unless the price hits my trigger price) with say a $200,000 account?
* I do not want to use margin.
6. I want to operate my own individual account and control a second individual account for my partner. Is this possible? Is it just a matter of switching using a single mouse click inside TWS? Or will I be required to log out and back in?

Thanks

1. Not sure
2. None
3. None
4. Only have experience with US markets, only a few dollars. Most are free if you generate >$30 commission/month.
5. There is conditional orders yes. Not sure about stocks but in futures it will reject the order if you try to buy more than your cash allows if you do not have margin so I don't think you can place a order that will exceed your margin.
6. You can run multiple instances of TWS.

I have cash and Shares in one of my IB accounts. Obviously as this was controlled by the broker BBY in liquidation I am not allowed to touch even though everything is sitting there which IB agree.
My question is dividends are still being paid into this account and I assume the liquidator gets them - anyone like to comment please?

G'day Freebird,
I'm not a BBY client but was (still am) involved in the MF Global administration (as a client) so have a great deal of empathy with your situation.

I had a quick look at the KPMG BBY administration site and it looks like there was a court hearing in late Jan-early Feb looking into how client monies will be distributed. It doesn't look like there's been a judgement handed down yet. I'd guess that the issue of dividends during the administration period will be part of those judgements when they're handed down.

All the best.

Hey you were supposed to be on open-ended Sabbatical. What happened?

Thanks - yes I keep up with the updates - seems not much hope of % return and the guarantee fund does not apply to IB as they are not here and part of the chess system?

Seems it could be in their interest to drag things out so they harvest more dividends?

Lol, sorry GB, one last post :)

I'm doing some wwoofing at the moment and helping a young couple set up a permaculture farm and build a house. Like me, they've built up their savings doing seasonal work but are looking at some other way to supplement their income.

They're interested in trading so I offered to do some informal mentoring. I came here looking for a link to Modest's futures thread as a good example of how someone had built up a successful trading plan and came across freebird54's post.

I know from experience how demoralising it can be a times when you have funds tied up in administration so thought I'd reply to freebird's post to help out. It sounds like he has everything under control :)
