Interactive Brokers

Anyone able to play their recorded webinars? Doesn't seem to load for me - keeps saying buffering :frown:

I tried downloading them too, but getting ridiculously slow download speeds - 15 hours to download one webinar.

I'm pretty sure it's not my internet connection as other video sites/downloads load quickly.

The helpdesk is often frustrating but I accept that comes with IB being a discount broker. The cultural thing is a factor too and you need to make sure you use languages that are absolutely clear.

Nine days later and my broker to broker transfer still hasn't gone through, i admit that i was perhaps expecting "too much" from IB being the king of "discount" brokers but its now moving towards the ridiculous where im expected to bring the two brokers together to facilitate the stock transfer.

I mean its a bit like Jetstar wanting me to fly co pilot or be the guy out on the runway waving the paddles.

if CGT isn't a concern and you aren't fully invested, maybe transferring your cash to IB, then selling off your stock on the market and simultaneously buying it back in IB might be easier?

that's what i did, as i had heard stories from others about the difficulties you're experiencing now. i wasn't fully invested at the time and my CGT situation was ok, so i did it. it cost me a few hundred bucks in brokerage, slippage and margin loan interest (had to wait for my sells out of commsec to settle and the cash to be transferred into IB), but then again i was moving something like 350K of stock over, so i thought it was worth it to avoid all that hassle. plus i would have had to pay almost as much in commsec off-market transfer fees anyway had i done it by broker to broker transfer.

even if doing what i did is not viable given your situation, i still think you should persist with it. these initial hassles are just once offs. once you're up and running smoothly in IB, it's highly likely you'll never want to go back to a mickey mouse broker again!

When I changed from Commsec to IB I simply transferred my cash to IB and placed any new trades with them, left the existing holdings with Commsec until they were eventually sold. I find keeping my Commsec account very worthwhile for free current pricing, research, filtering etc.

IB is not currently offering margin accounts for Australian customers and cannot give an answer when or if they will ever be made available again..

Does anybody have any more information about this?

Where did you get that info from?

t'was a Reg T margin account which I had closed for a period as I was not active, and cannot re-open now.. support is unable to provide a time line or confirm if this will be permanent or not so I'm forced to switch brokers unfortunately..

did they give you any notice by email?

I just check my Reg T margin accounts, they both have the margin facility....

likewise, just logged into TWS and account management, my account still shows up as reg-t margin in both, even though i have not used my margining facility for 2 years or so. though i've never actually closed it, i just hardly ever use it

My latest conversation with account support as follows:

Gigi M: Hello, this is 'Gigi M'. How may I help you?
-Hi can you please explain the situation with Reg T margin accounts for Australian customers?
Gigi M: Yes, right now we are undergoing a structure upgrade, and margin accounts are not available for Australian residents at the moment
Gigi M: you can either open a cash account first and upgrade to margin later when it is available agaim
Gigi M: *again
Gigi M: or if you wish you can apply for the account after margin accounts are available again
-can you confirm if this is temporary or permanent.. and is there some kind of time line I could work by?
Gigi M: this is temporary, I do not have a definite time frame, but we were told that it would take about 1-2 months
Gigi M: I apologize for the inconvenience
-thats ok.. I guess I will have to keep checking in with you guys weekly to find out when they're are available again.. thanks.. bye
Gigi M: you are welcome. Goodbye and have a nice day!

Sounding more positive this time, the last few contacts I had could not confirm if it was temporary or permanent

Well, nice of them to let us know...lol...as usual hopeless service...legendary in fact:rolleyes:

My account with IB has operational margin..... Do these changes apply only to new accounts perhaps?

Now 14 days and its clear as mud that no one at IB will lift a finger you make sure my stock transfer goes through...as far as i can tell (from Commsec) there has been no contact whatsoever...now i wouldn't of gone down this road if IB didn't offer a stock transfer service on sign up.

Pretty bizarre to offer a service and then make absolutely no effort to follow it through...anyway so i will sell a stock to fund the account and take the CGT hit that i was hoping to avoid, but with my rattled confidence in IB i will not commit the funds i was planning to, ill keep it at the minimum 10K.

I mean imagine if something big actually happened, these guys just wouldn't give a toss. :2twocents

Since you've already have your IB account open, have you tried "Transfer Position" under Account Management?
