Incredible Dogs

Thanks, GL. I hadn't seen that. Amazing that the dog appears so healthy after three weeks at sea, presumably without food or water.

Funny how this thread just came up today, I GOT BITTEN BY A DOG!

I was walking along as I do most days for my exercise and a little girl walking a small dog was walking towards me. I had 2 choices, walk on the girls side or walk on the dogs side, I chose the dog. For no reason at all it started barking and attacked me, it bit me on one leg and scratched me on the other. What went wrong? The little girl apologised and I said never mind but my wife was panicking when I got home. Don't know what to say, lucky I wasn't overseas as I would have had to have 5 rabies shots.

I used to have a female staffy named " indi", would chase anything that was thrown , rocks , wood , balls , anything.

Was staying in Port Macdonnel S.A and walking dog along the foreshore nr the jetty when i spotted a fin splashing around in the shallows...i threw a shell towards it for the dog and it spotted the fish.... after a bit of a chase my dog came bolting back out of the water with a 1 kg ish Leatherjacket ( good eating ish) and dumped it at my feet ...

:D she certainly deserved a good dinner that night.

nice place port macdonnell and well worth a visit

Hope the little **** didn't inflict too much damage, Bill.
I've had the same experience. Just walking along with my own dog at heel. Didn't see any dogs anywhere. Then out of nowhere came a mid sized dog which sank its teeth into my calf!

If you know where the small biter came from, I'd be thinking about visiting the owners to suggest they get some training for the cranky little thing. No dog with any propensity to bite without provocation should be on the streets, especially with only a small child in charge. Pretty irresponsible of the parents.

Your spot on about the rabies Bill, Australia and New Zealand are the only two countries without rabies.

You should still go see a GP. Dog's mouth carry all sorts of baterias - many eat their own poo . There are specific antibiotics that you can take if you are bitten by dogs. It's a piece of mind as the consequences can be quite significant.

Trust me... my wife is a GP and she's seen plenty of it.

That's what my wife said too, she would have only been about 5 years old.

Yes I believe you but Doctors always take most cautious route. I gave it a good wash out and then blasted it with some betadine and covered it up. Luckily no pain this morning so I think I might have taken care of it, thanks for the tip.

At the end did the Beagle actually jump from that height to the ground? I was holding my breath hoping not - just too far.

Dogs can teach us far more than we can teach them imo. I wish I could approach every day with the joy and optimism that my dog unfailing does. They have such an enviable capacity to live in the moment and enjoy every second of it.:)

He did jump and he made it! It was pretty cute when his friends came to the gate - all watching their freedom fighter make a run for it.

Gosh I want a dog now :(

You could never have a better companion if you choose the right breed.

This might be rather off the thread topic, but if anyone has any surefire techniques for getting a dog to come when called without fail, I'd love to hear about them.

I've had German Shepherds all my adult life and they've all been easy to train, until I got the present girl, now 18 months. From the start, she has been 100% confident, outgoing, friendly and above all hugely social with other dogs.
So I've had to work pretty hard to train her to stay at heel when out walking and not attempt to rush off to meet every dog we pass.

Off the lead on the beach when there are no distractions (other dogs or even people), she runs off and does what she wants but as soon as I stop walking she obediently comes and sits beside me.

But if she's off the lead and another dog appears, she's away toward it in great excitement and is not deterred from trying to get it to play even when it's on a lead and the owner clearly doesn't want my Lucy anywhere near his/her dog.
My calling her is ineffectual. Have also trained her to come when I blow on a plastic whistle, but she chooses not to hear this either when there's another dog.

She's not motivated by food, so trying to persuade her to come back for a food reward doesn't work. Also is not a retriever, so can't entice her with stick or ball to fetch.

She doesn't lack for canine social contact - plays with the dog next door most days, plus they're joined by the local teenagers who are great with them.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received. I've tried everything that has worked for me in the past. She should be 100% obedient at 18 months but is still very puppyish, runs round with her soft toys etc.
