Holism (from ὅλος holos, a Greek word meaning all, entire, total) is the idea that all the properties of a given system (biological, chemical, social, economic, mental, linguistic, etc.) cannot be determined or explained by the sum of its component parts alone. Instead, the system as a whole determines in an important way how the parts behave.

The general principle of holism was concisely summarized by Aristotle in the Metaphysics: "The whole is more than the sum of its parts".
Reductionism is sometimes seen as the opposite of holism. Reductionism in science says that a complex system can be explained by reduction to its fundamental parts. Essentially, chemistry is reducible to physics, biology is reducible to chemistry and physics, psychology and sociology are reducible to biology, etc. Some other proponents of reductionism, however, think that holism is the opposite only of greedy reductionism.

On the other hand, holism and reductionism can also be regarded as complementary viewpoints, in which case they both would be needed to get a proper account of a given system.

The way I see it :-

Holism is when you get married..
and reductionism is when you get divorced
(never been there , but I'm sure the term "greedy reductionism" is occasionally appropriate as well :(

Then there's the theoretical theological makeup of one person :-

Then there's the theoretical meaning of the meaning of a word - extracted from its language (etc - could go on forever here lol) :- (seriously optional reading - just making the point that these philosophers seem hell bent on getting themselves tied into knots ;)

I've been reading some of your posts now and I realise you have quite a way with words. Given that they're usually quite lengthy in nature, and also that most of them are not stuff which I usually pay attention to, I've probably not read your posts often enough. But the ones that caught my eye usually either leaves a silly grin on my face when I got to the end of it, or left me thinking "how profound". Just a note to say keep up the good work and keep posting. Cheers...

Hey New girl haven't seen you around for ages... Not so brand spanking new anymore... :p

This is a brain teaser isn't it? who are they then? Reminds me of a I.Q. test Question... It kind of comes across as a bit dependent and needy... I thought getting married was enough to prove you're monogamous... What would I know anyway when it comes to getting marriage so maybe the rules of the game change or something...

This thread is all about holism lol - our mutual interdependence ;)
As for my thought patterns, apart from the fact that I'm a compulsive lateral thinker
a) a man is infinitely more complex than his own thoughts, and
b) what hath a man if he hath not a little madness ;)
c) insanity - a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world (where people get married for instance lol).

Of these I like a) best lol. The second and third ones worries me a bit - on the quantum of such madness that is.

hey insider/outsider/somewhereinbetween

yep, I had a near fatal injury in Feb, lost someone I loved dearly. So I guess you could say I was in mourning. All O.k. now:). A bit like Neo from the Matrix. After he died, love revived him. He stood up shook his neck sideways, dusted himself off, streched his hand and invited his opponents for another match yet again. Seriously good movie, I think everyone should have a copy of it in their homes:D

Enough about me this is about Sean, CONGRATS;) one lucky woman that's for sure, I mean smart, great sense of humer AND has the prettiest charts ever:), not to mention brave, strong, ohh I could go on for hours...............

Hopefully we'll hear about little Rach running around in your household in the future, I've got one.
