Humans: Good or bad?

I agree with above, and that's why I don't agree with the death penalty as a deterrent.

However, I agree that it might be justice.

And that is why some societies have it, and we should have it for certain crimes.

A justice system, requires justice.

Well, its not chopping someone's head off ... just a nice example of corporate bloodymindedness and another bit of support for the 'bad' case...

Fitness First wins legal stoush over 'sick' woman's contract

August 7, 2008 - 11:53AM

Gym giant Fitness First has taken a former member, who could not work out due to medical problems, to court - all for the sake of $200.

The Supreme Court today ruled that Suh Yoke Chong, who suffers from lupus, thyroid problems and sleep apnoea should not be refunded a $200 cancellation fee after she was unable to continue her membership due to blurred vision and headaches.

Ms Chong, who signed a contract with Fitness First on April 9, 2007, after she had put on weight due to steroid medication she was taking, took her case to the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal.

She told the tribunal that, during her conversation with the Fitness First consultant, he gave her the terms and conditions and told her to "sign here, here and here".

"The reason I told him [about my medical condition] is that I hope that he will be honest with me, that whether my condition can do the gym and he told me that, 'Oh, you find the right place, this is the best place to lose weight.' "

Ms Chong signed the contract without reading the terms and conditions, which state that a cancellation fee of $200 applies if membership is terminated within the first two months and after a 15-day cooling-off period.

The tribunal ruled in September last year that Ms Chong be reimbursed that money.

It found that "a valid contract required the parties have [a] ... meeting of the minds, in that they each fully know and understand the terms and conditions of the agreement."

However, Associate Justice Joanne Harrison today found that the tribunal member erred in the law on that point and that Ms Chong was bound by the conditions of the contract. She made no order as to costs.

Comment is being sought from Fitness First.

Eh?

That's a novel concept! Someone should suggest that to Gu'mint.
Yes, in most cultures it's a justice system, not a rehabilitation system.

Rehab is actually only a recent concept, developed by our JC born again love one and all brothers, which is relevant for our day.

We believe we can rehabilitate people.

I don't think so.

Generally.

I do.
I have worked on prisons (not in the psycholocal field) and have spoken to many people about it.
Women in particular are amenable to rehabilitation.

Often people are in prison for lack of judgement due to mental illnesses or addictions to drugs or addictions to gambling. Sometimes it is spur of the moment stuff. Sexual offenders and psychopaths are different but your average jail bird can be taught a new way forward in life. We don't want to go the US way. Victoria has been pretty successful in obtaining rehabilitation.

Of course there are some who are just too badly damaged by their upbringing to recover properly.

Knobby, I haven't been in, or seen the rehab system, but from an outsider perspective, we give defaulters WAY too much after they have offended.

Unfortunately, I have a warped bias towards a certain theory in that you are a contributor, or you are a waste of time and effort and should be discarded!

And, I think the human race is going through a period where we are trying to keep too many people alive. We no longer need to do this. The earth is overpopulated with humans. We are destroying the planet.

Soon, she will hit back.

The programming we have been given that has allowed the human species to survive is no longer relevent.

The little wars that we have been having recently are going to culminate in the most massive distruction of life that we could ever imagine.

Sorry, off on a tangent...

BRING IT ON MOTHER NATURE! ill be planning a little development on the moon when that happens

How does one stop perpetuating `bad`?

One way is to be aware that you are doing it.Don`t pass your anger onto someone else. This is not easy as we are taught to tit for tat, get them back, revenge, hurt them some way.

Are you perpetuating `bad`?

Of course you are.You like putting others down because it makes you feel good, dominant and controlling.Human nature???

What `bad` did you perpetuate today?

Humans - impressionable but good.

Last 30 years western poplular culture - compelling but bad.

Hollywood seems to want you to think self centeredness, along with stabbing and bashing to near death, is COOOOOL man!

Next they will have us thinking domestic violence is cool ... just need a bit of slow mo and a cool backing track.

Saw juno the other night ... a few years of movies and tv shows about essentially good people would make a big diff to our society IMO.

Killing for food/defence or killing and hurting for pleasure. That is the boundary that seperates humans from animals.
From mans recorded history up to present there has been a gradual change (of thinking?) from animal instinctive/survival behaviour to a species consciousness that this is one small living planet that we need to be in balance with.
