Okay, so the actual question is how do i find a particular company?

For example, gold mining companies or iron ore producing companies or uranium exploring companies? etc etc

Or maybe categorised by country of operation such as exploring in Ghana etc

I've looked on ASX but i dont think they provide an effective search tool.

I'm doing this because i want to find companies by myself, because right now i'm only hearing about companies from other people based on their opinions. I would like to have the ability to try search for particular listed companies in areas where i feel the market has undervalued it.

How to find them ????

Well you got to start somewhere, but as to how to find them that depends on your goals.....

If its to invest , or trade good stock then read below.... If you want to speculate on penny dreadfuls and hot tips?????? someone else may need to respond.

Since the biggest lesson Ive ever learnt is only to trade or buy companies you would love to get stuck with , then for starters they need to have yeild. So that immediately cuts the market in half. Secondly if you only go with 100% franked shares that eliminates another 1/2. Then if you look for High ROE , low debt and a history of goof management that narrows it down to about 25 stock on the whole ASX.

Thats not a bad place to start. To find this information you need stock analysis information....
Comsec has good free information to registered users as does etrade. I personally use stockval, but its too expensive for a beginner.

So I guess the real question you need answered hear is what online web sites are all you guys n gals using for your stock information.

Comsec , ETrade, The Austrailian, Age, SMH, Switzer etc....

Alternatively You can google asx gold miners and you will get a list , then go to their own web sites and read thier annual reports, about us, and announcements....

The market map is a useful tool for identifying stocks by sector. Webiress (and possibly others) will have one.

But I know of no free information that gives you the amount of details you are looking for... e.g search for key terms like exploration, gold, Ghana. Webiress has some information for many companies but the descriptions are not searchable, let alone queried.

Comsec also has company activity descriptions, but again I am unaware of them being searchable. It also provides the revenue breakdown by geography for some companies, but definitely by activities or costs.

.

Another way is to buy the top stocks book each year .... Its already got rid of most the noise you dont want anything to do with..... There are still stocks in that book I would not invest in, but not too many..... the bulk are pretty decent or they dont make it in the book in the first place......

Then start comparing those and youll be on track.... Its a bit of work, but youve got to do the work to learn the lessons, hopefully while always preserving capital.....

Or just buy a copy of the weekend fin and trawl through the share tables which are broken down into the subcategories you may be looking for.

The ASX site search function will find what u want, it just wont put it all on the first page or even the second page...and sometimes u need to be a little creative to get the results u want.

Type Ghana into the search box and in the first 10 pages of results will be all listed gold miners/explorers operating in Ghana.

A lot of this knowledge comes simply from being involved in the markets, and certain sectors. As you study the share market more, you slowly piece together what co's operate where and do what. So if someone metions a specific commodity or country you automatically think what companies are involved, and you know this simply because you have come across it in your readings

Type in Ghana mate, and also read some Joseph Conrad and also watch the movie Apocalypse Now, then type in Ghana again into google.

Then go back to the weekend Fin Review and stay away from any stocks in bloody Ghana.

There is a reason why there is an H in Ghana.
