Could someone please tell me how to edit a photograph. Not just crop it, but actually remove an unwanted element.

I've tried using Paint, Irfanview and basic Photoshop but am obviously missing a step because I've failed.

Photo is attached. There is a white line crossing the photograph (rope securing a tarp suspended over the pool from a tree at far left.
I would like to eliminate the white line from the photograph.

Any assistance will be gratefully received.

incidentally Julia
I use a thing called MGI Photosuite
just have to cut and paste small extracts of leaf/braches etc over the offending white line. Then I do a screen dump as follows (to get back to a sensible file size...

I find screen dumps the easiest way to keep control of photo size around here ( both dimensions and kB etc)
eg (alt + print screen ) saves the image on the screen at that size
then I personally go to Irfanview and use "cntl + V" = paste, then crop, save etc.

I have a thing called ArcSoft PhotoImpression 4, and never used it before so I thought I would give it a go.

Once the photo is loaded, I hit the 'zoom in' to maximise the size.
Click 'edit', then 'retouch' and there is a 'clone' button that actually does the cut and paste using a number of sizes in circular patches.

If I compressed I went down to the same size as Kauri, so I just resized down enough to get under the 146.5 KB Limit.

I'm still trying to figure out what you are talking about here, 2020. Is the Irfanview part of MGI Photosuite?

Hummm, I think I lost a bit of colour quality in the resizing and posting back process.

you're much more professional than me / I.

I used both MGI (came with Sony camera)
and also Irfan ( a shareware) ;)

Must try some of the new features on some of the new stuff.
How mush is Arcsoft?

If you have adobe photo shop I find the
"Healing Brush Tool" very useful -
(4th button down LHS on tool bar)
with this you select a different area ie all the green and then past similar over the white line..

For everyone else I recently found this tool which is very useful if you take a lot of photos -
Photo Resizer by Microsoft powertools free download from Power Tools page. This tool allows you to select 1 or 500 photos in a file right click and resize them all at once. (Other people may have already known how to do this but I have always had to open every photo in adobee or the like and resize and save) this saves heaps of time and is great for saving or emailing etc..

2020, do you mean you used both MGI (which I don't have) and also Irfanview (which I do) to cure the problem?

Looks fine - just what I was after.

Could you give me detailed instructions for how to do it in Irfanview please?

With thanks.

Adobee, I only recently discovered I had Adobee Photoshop Album 2.0 Starter edition. Is this different from what you have used? I haven't found the "Healing Brush Tool" which sounds very useful. Did you use that to successfully remove the white line?

Has anyone had any experience in doing this sort of removal in "Paint".
I tried using that with a couple of the tools but didn't succeed.
There must be a way to do it.

I dont think you can in paint it is a very basic program..
The only option you have is to pick a similar colour and colour it in. I dont even think you can specify colour to choose exactly same as surrrounds in paint.. I would expect the cd you got with your digital camera will have a better photo editing program either.. else go to the manufacturers website and download something..

i recommend the gimp if you want to do image manipulation. it provides a comparable toolset to photoshop (which costs about $1500) only it is free.

Dear Julia.
Maybe a few more flowers would be nice ?
A few less pots maybe ?
A trim of the yellow flowers over the pathway ?

:)))))))))))
Kindest regards,

Julia, sorry - I had to use both. Irfanview can only have one picture open at a time (as far as I can see). I'm 99% sure it would not be suitable for what you want.

The feature that wipes out the white line requires either "retouch" or similar,(semi-sophisticated software as whiskers referred to) -

or manual cut and paste small extracts from the same photo - nearby foliage etc (which is what I did - but within MGI - yuo can even use other shapes than rectangular).

When I have to cut small extracts from a larger picture - ( as I did for the koala on branch in poetry thread for instance - tracing around his outline), then I have to use MGI.

But I use Irfan for everything else. Don't tell whiskers - but their icon is a red cat (flat). Let's be optimistic and say it's sunning itself. :2twocents

sorry - not much help to you here. Others might know Irfan better than me/I

Now idea, 2020. It came with the computer. I didn't realise I had it until I went looking to see what I had. I had something on an earlier computer that I made my own Xmas cards with a few years ago. It might have been Paint.

Hmmm, I might do some cards again this year now that I have discovered this.

Whaaatt is this about a flat red cat! :p:

Thanks for the alternative, Uncle Barry, but I am quite fond of the pots.
What did you use to remove them?

Thanks, Disarray. Will give it a go.

Thank you to everyone for willingness to help - much appreciated.

Well, my cat (AKA 'The Rodent' since her hair cut) likes Julia's garden!
