Hey there guys,

My name is Ivan, I'm 18 years of age and currently studying a business degree at uni - majoring in finance with submajors in econometrics and stats.

I decided that my new years resolution would be to get into stocks and the asx, but I've no idea where to start.

I have an account at ComSec but I've yet to start trading.

Here are a few questions I'd just want to ask before I get started

- Is there any fancy software or anything like that which will help me in terms of monitoring/analyzing trends of stocks?

- How do i go about determining which shares will be profitable in the long run and which ones will be in the short (dividends)?

That's all for now - I guess I'll post more questions as they pop into my head.

Cheers

Hello and welcome Ivanyo,

In addition to Burglar's post (which is a very good link) have a read through the beginner's forum as well as the education center at www.asx.com.au

The asx site will teach you all the basics and help you to start thinking aboit what sort of trading/investing you want to do (Fundamental, Technical, combination of both, etc)

All the best!

I second techs book choice, it's the most helpful book in my library. Also, you may want to concider longer term Buffet style investing, "Value.Able" by Roger Montgomery is great at explaining how to find companies that are trading under their intrinsic value. Have a look at his blog, rogermontgomery.com.au.
