Super strength Mozzie spray. Developed by Swedish Chemist marketed in Australia as Bushman by friends of mine...being re imported into Sweden by me on my upcoming trip to mosquito infested Torne river banks around Nunasvaara and Vittangi...

Fascinating. :)

Interesting story. The Bushman website states the creator/inventor of the product is Tom Bethurem an industrial chemist. Was he Swedish ? The Bushman website goes to great lengths to emphasize it's Australian character.

CUBE SHAPED WATERMELONS in JAPAN .Round watermelons are so last century. Case in point: Farmers in Japan have begun to ‘grow’ cube-shaped watermelons by inserting them into tempered glass squares while the fruit is still growing on the vine. Not only do they look cool, they take up less room in the fridge too and are easier to stack !

De-Banking Australia

De-banking in Australia refers to the practice of banks and financial institutions closing the accounts of clients perceived to be high-risk, often without providing a clear reason or opportunity for appeal. This phenomenon has been affecting various financial services businesses, including fintech companies, money transfer organizations, and cryptocurrency exchanges.

The impact of de-banking is significant, as it can lead to increased risks of money laundering and terrorism financing, negatively affecting the economy. AUSTRAC, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, has expressed concerns about the indiscriminate closure of accounts, which can have a disproportionate impact on legitimate businesses.

Fintech Australia, the industry body, has reported that around 150 of its members have been de-banked by banks and financial institutions in Australia, with no reason provided or ability to appeal the decision. The CEO of Fintech Australia has called for an end to this “anti-competitive” behavior from Australia’s banks.

The de-banking of fintech companies, in particular, can have far-reaching consequences, as it can limit their ability to operate and provide services to their customers. For example, Nium, a Singapore-headquartered company that provides cross-border remittance and other payments services, has been de-banked by seven Australian banks, which nearly derailed its Australian launch in 2015.
The de-banking of cryptocurrency exchanges is also a significant issue, with Bitcoin Babe, a cryptocurrency exchange, testifying that it has been de-banked 91 times and bullied by AUSTRAC. The industry body has called for self-regulation and an end to such “anti-competitive” behavior from Australia’s banks.

The de-banking phenomenon in Australia highlights the need for a more balanced approach to risk management and customer service. While banks and financial institutions must ensure they are complying with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations, they must also provide a fair and transparent process for dealing with high-risk clients.

It seems to me that if banks have reason to believe some clients are inherently dishonest or financially dangerous than closing their accounts seems like a prudent risk management strategy. I think that many crypto currency based companies run teh rsik of being seen as questionable.

Beyond Bank is essentially a people owned Credit Union. I think they would be far more likely to take such action vs a more commercial approach by the Big 4.

If a bank account is being used a conduit to transfer funds gained by scams then surely it should be closed down ?

Right in the center of the island nation of Madagascar there’s a strange, almost perfectly circular geological structure. It covers a bigger area than the city of Paris — and at first glance, it looks completely empty. But right in the center of that structure, there’s a single, isolated village: a few dozen houses, some fields of crops, and dirt roads stretching out in every direction.
When we first saw this village on Google Earth, its extreme remoteness fascinated us.
Was the village full of people? How did they wind up there? And what did life look like in such a strange geography? To find out, we teamed up with a local team in Madagascar and fell down a rabbit hole of geology and mapping along the way. It’s a story of how continental shifts and volcanic geology came together to form a place for a group of people to call home.

IN VITRO VERITAS

The Vatican’s Secret Role in the Science of IVF

More than half a century ago, men of science and men of faith gathered together to unlock the mysteries of female fertility. The answer: urine from the brides of Christ. And lo, those nuns gaveth.

On a spring day in Rome, 1957—the season of Pope Pius XII’s Ash Wednesday Mass, wisteria blooming by the Spanish Steps—30-year-old Bruno Lunenfeld gave one hell of a presentation. What he said had the potential to shape the course of history in ways even the Vatican couldn’t foresee.

Inside an imposing L-shaped building that stretched down Via Casilina and then along Via L’Aquila, in a wood-paneled library distinguished by rows of leather-bound books and cream floor tiles spangled with stars, the dozen or so board members of a pharmaceutical company listened as Lunenfeld described his findings. For four years he had been developing a therapy that would induce ovulation in women struggling with infertility. What he needed now was the support of the Istituto Farmacologico Serono, whose own staff scientist, Piero Donini, had been working on a similar endeavor, and who had facilitated Lunenfeld’s trip from Israel to Rome. The men listened politely, but at the end of the presentation they told him, with regret, that they couldn’t help.

They believed certain hurdles to be insurmountable. It seemed unlikely, for instance, that Serono would be able to procure the vast quantities of one specific essential substance without which the drug couldn’t be made.

They kept that quiet. Reporting it 2 weeks after the event.
