Christchurch NZ Earthquake

Agree, Calliope. As I mentioned in Kennas' doomsday thread, he seems too to have had enough of sensation seeking journalists when - after some silly girl from ABC Radio repeatedly asked him "how are people coping, it must be just terrible", he said in a justifiably snappy tone "they're coping magnificently. they have no choice".

Mr Parker and Mr Key deserve the thanks of everyone.

Good to hear that your family are all ok Julia. I wish them well over the coming months.

As for myself, I'm just hoping now that we don't get a really dry spell over autumn/winter. With all the timber that's now lying on the ground a dry spell could mean some serious fires come August/September.

Hope not, white crane. This will be the summer to equal the Queen's 'annus horribilus' some years ago and one we will all hope will never be replicated.

Got an email, the Christchurch reps family is OK though there house is damaged.

Good result - thanks Julia for the advice about phones.

Gees, I wouldn't want to be in NZ atm for quids with a decent shock near wellington at depth and another decent shallow aftershock at Christchurch.

It looks like that Greendale fault is extending with the vast majority of the shocks since last year in a small area along the extension of the Greendale fault line.

From what I heard they have decent building codes for quakes, but suspect some dodgy sub standard construction in many buildings built in the 60's and 70's, many of the worst affected buildings.

Also according to reports that CTV building was split and getting worse nearly every day before it collapsed. What on earth were they doing still occuping the building?

Interesting article in my local paper.

I've heard of a couple of cases locally where the council or a club has placed a time capsule to be opened at some later date and then when the time is near nobody can find the documents etc that say where it is.

But this one sounds odd to be inside a statue that one would expect to last for eternity.

We had a big jolt in Wellington 2 nights ago, and it freaked us all out..........I cant even imagine what the poor people and animals are going through down in Christchurch!

I was in Welly 3 weekends ago (before the Chch 6.3).

Loved it! Very cool city! But jeez I thought to myself I wouldn't like to be here in a big shake.

Ugh - Early this morning, Wellington had an even bigger jolt than tuesday's jolt
