Can you get summary statistics on the market, such as EPS etc.?

Essentially I am just trying to get some context around the freely available data on the internet. So for example is the particular published statistic good for the industry and sector or bad ?
I'm eventually going to work on a trading model I can use to identify if I think the share is a good investment overall or not based on available information.
Do you know of any other data sources ? I feel I really need to understand how the market performs as a whole before I can make informed decisions about investing.
