Buying gold coins - Can they be legally smelted?

Heres one in perfect uncirculated condition minted in Melbourne 100 years ago (1909) for $550 .... they contain close to a 1/4 Oz of 22 carat.

What do you mean they contain 1/4Oz of 22carat? 1 ounce is 31.3grms so are you saying they have 7.75grms of 22ct? or are you just saying the coin weighs 7.75 grams and its 22ct gold??

I picked up 5 22ct sovereigns today, ill post some picks if i can.

Assuming you have someone in mind to melt and shape the ring you could ask them how they usually do it. Hopefully you already have a professional in mind for this. Sounds very costly!

I could do it on the down low with an oxy bottle and a few moulds. Might not be quite round and could also have a few sharp edges though :D

i once saw this river phoenix movie where he proposed to a girl with a plastic ring that you get on one of those 20c machines that you put a cion in and turn the knob.

tell her the ring is plastic because your love can not be measuerd in gold. :)

if you dont look like river phoenix, you migth try paying your local chinese restaurant $100 to put a ring in a fortune cookie and make sure she gets the cookie.

the night before the wedding get your lawyer to pay her a visit and sign the pre-nup. experience has shown that women are reluctant to lose face 12 hours before their weddign over a piece of paper. :) say you are doing it to protect the kids from evil lawyers.

to ensure a marriage lasts. go for the most extreme version of christianity available. or even consider extremist islam or hinduism, where divorce initiated my the woman is extremely unlikely, and poteantially a fatal mistake.

the gold coin story is a bit unbelievable. i would not go with that. buy shares with the money you save. good luck

Digging up a very old thread.

I proposed to my girlfriend on Friday, she said yes :)

Excuse the lack of focus. Macro photography is a bugger when you don't have straight lines to do autofocus, and you have astigmatism in both eyes :p Depth of field is about 2-3mm at this range, and I couldn't tell looking through the lens whether it was focused or not.
