Burning the Koran?

I'm amazed at the publicity given to this. Apparently the pastor lives in some very small place and has a congregation of around 50 people.
If everyone had just ignored him, instead of getting hysterical about it, he'd have probably forgotten about the whole pointless idea.

It's hard to say, Julia. The publicity about the planned burning gave an opportunity for those with more sensible heads to dissuade him from going ahead.

If there had been no publicity and he had gone ahead with the burning of the Korans, it is almost certain that the action would have been posted on YouTube by one of his congregation and with the way the internet works, it wouldn't be long before the Muslim world became aware of it.

Mainstream media can no longer control what the public will or will not see or hear. I am sure the pastor's motivation for the burning was not simply to reduce the number of copies of the Koran available, but was to make a political/religious statement. Hence all available resources would have been utilised to publicise the action taken.

One only has to look at such recent deeds as the lady binning the cat or the young girl throwing the puppies in the river to see how what would otherwise be non-events can be become worldwide YouTube "hits" without any mainstream media promotion.

How is he teaching anybody a lesson? I think this guy is just a little crazy

I think there's a lot of mis/disinformation regarding this one.

I thought the original intent was to say radical Islam is untidy and that all people should make a stand against it, like we should against radical Christianity.

Religion is so emotive, burning anyone's books is bound to end in tears.
