Hi,

I want to start learning about the stock market and in a few months invest $1k in the stock market. I was wondering what would be the best way to learn/research which stocks are decent, I mean would I have to go through the newspaper everyday? Is there a site where I can see past figures etc. is it possible on the asx website? Any books?

I personally like shares mag and their website www.sharesmag.com.au
You should find old copies in the library as well.

If you sign up to one of the internet brokers you should get free access to research which will have the data you want

ASX site would have them but only for individual companies so lots of reading may be involved

Go to Nine Msn's Investor website.

Educate yourself first though.

I think personally 1k is too little to invest in the stock market, its really an all or nothing bet. Better off saving really hard for a while, and trying to make that 1k larger....

If you have a small amount to invest and can only afford to buy into one company - have a look at LIC's (Listed Investment Companies), they are lower risk and give you an exposure to a wider segment of the market (its more like following the overall market)...You wont double your money, but you wont lose it all either.

In the meantime, you need to get up to speed on information about sharemarket news, here's my list of resources that I usually check through the day.....

Good site with pleanty of new and info updated throughout the day, also has price charts for ASX listed companies.

Great independant analysis of the financial markets. Weekly newsletter is a must read.

Online newspaper business section, generally reasonable business journalism. Of particular interest, read Alan Kohler's commentary articles...... I think he is one of the best (he's the finance guy for the ABC news) - he can be found at;
