ASF Issues, Errors and Problems

i wouldn't know i have been out all day , so it ain't me spamming the threads , today

but it seems Commsec was glitchy .. they are still apologizing , so might be an area thing ( a landline somewhere )

My gut feeling is that it must be an isolated issue as the site is loading fine for me. It the issue was more widespread there would be more posts in this thread.
Ended up having to attend to work priorities so didn't check for outages/degraded internet services etc.
ASF loads fast and is running like a trooper now thus, agree that the issue lay somewhere between here and there, lol... 🍻

had a couple of minutes of ' page not found ' including the home age , wasn't the ISP this time ( the trading platforms still worked "OK )

but i was busy watching market prices , so no big drama for me

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not sure what was causing issues today but assume that it was some kind network connectivity problem. Could those experiencing issues today please report back in this thread tomorrow so I can establish whether it is an ongoing issue or just a one off.

Thank you.

yes, very slow on occasion , or won't even open the page. ....for a few minutes ... then clears up, back to normal /fast. This has been the case several times during Thursday. Other sites working okay,

Sometimes we get bot or DDOS attacks out of places like China or Russia that slow the site down. It's all very random and hard to figure out.

This attack was engineered by scammers in Asia who demanded I take down this thread. I said no and ASF got attacked. They all ended up getting arrested in the end, so justice was served eventually.

interesting ....

i used to be a member on a different forum and had my suspicions on Malaysian residents over posts on a different ( ASX listed ) stock being heavily 'down-ramped '

nice to see the lot above were caught

kinda strange ASF got targeted , this doesn't seem to be a 'boiler-room haven ' ( not much to gain here from such activity , i would think )

had a few distractions today but ASF viewing was affected by my ISP dropping out from time to time

( not much we can do about that )

cheers

I often navigate through the 'current visitors' drop down menu from the 'members' tab. Mostly to see what the feeloading 'guests' are viewing and almost every time there's a 'guest' viewing @frugal.rock's profile. Not exaggerating. What is there to see? Surely their inexplicable curiosity is sated by now? Never seen anyone checking out my profile.

.... so , is this an Issue, an Error or a Problem?

Most "Guests" are actually bots who are just crawling ASF's content. Many of them you want, such as search engine crawlers, but others are here for unknown reasons. The vast majority of bots are not abusive and they generally don't slow down the site. I've tried blocking them in the past but it's a bit like playing Whack-A -Mole; block one and another pops up in its place. I don't like the idea of blocking search engine crawlers because ASF relies on search engine traffic for new members, so I just leave them alone and occasionally I block one here or there if I have reason to think that it's better that they weren't here.

Hmm, can you tell me any info about my unsolicited guest?
Like, origin.

You probably have had hundreds over the years, but they can only "see" what a real person who visits the website can see (i.e your ASF profile information if you have allowed non-members to view it). They can't see anything more than that. Anyone can restrict their profile to viewable by Members Only if they want. Just check your account privacy settings.

Certain Bots can find out about a person though that's not ASF's fault. If a person accurately states which town they live in then by clicking on it a picture comes up. If it has 5,000 people living there and it is known what sex they are they must be 1 of 2,500. If they joined ASF 18 years ago they must be at least 36 years old and one of 1,000. If they said they are retired then one of 250. If they gave away other information in photographs it can be reduced much further. A persistent Bot could find them. A few members show their photographs with background information - one is speaking to the whole world of 8.1 billion people.

On Facebook some people only allow certain people to visit so access is not possible. The trouble there is Facebook gives away visitors. If their Facebook page is open to all then they will have messages sent to the person. So they can easily give away lots of information even tracking them to a house address without knowing their surname.
