Council move leaves tiny Aussie town 'cut off from the world': 'Disgraceful'

A small rural town in Queensland has lost the majority of its free-to-air television, leaving the already isolated community even more cut off.

Eidsvold is situated two hours inland from Hervey Bay and boasts beautiful landscape but is incredibly remote, known to be a hub for the regional cattle industry.

The local council made the decision to shut down the transmission tower which previously provided the television service saying it was too costly to continue, with local council member Margot Stork reminding the community that the service is not a "core business of council".
 
Whilst I strongly dislike the words "non core" and see them as merely an excuse, since that's the context the term is almost always used in, an excuse, in this case it's inevitable.

Broadcast TV is one of those things that exists only because it exists. If it didn't already exist then nobody would establish it today.

Go back a generation and TV networks were right up there as prime examples of big business and among the best known companies. Now go ask a teenager today to name some big businesses and they won't mention a single TV station just as they won't mention newspapers. It's way past its peak as a concept of relevance and the big networks are mere shadows of what they once were in every way. To the point that most have over the past few years sold up their once prestigious studios and moved to somewhere far smaller on cheaper land and that says it all really.

There'll be a lot more signals switched off in the years ahead. A lot more.

Protests have broken out across the US after the public release of videos showing five officers savagely beating Tyre Nichols, who later died.

The videos from police body-worn cameras and a camera mounted on a utility pole were posted online a day after the officers were charged with second-degree murder, assault, kidnapping, official misconduct and oppression in relation to Mr Nichols' death.

Four video clips chronicle an aggressive escalation of violence directed at a motorist, who police had initially said they pulled over for reckless driving. The police chief has since said the cause for the stop has not been substantiated.
The videos are filled with violent moments showing the officers, who are also black, chasing and pummelling Nichols and leaving him on the pavement, propped against a squad car as they fist-bumped and celebrated their actions.

As the videos were released on Friday evening, protests flared up across the US.

Global chemicals maker 3M will be accused of a decades-long campaign to deceive the public about the risks of its controversial “forever chemicals” as it faces a series of bombshell legal claims worth up to $US40 billion ($58 billion) that a judge described as an “existential threat” to multiple defendants’ survival.

The Wall Street giant is bracing for a landmark legal trial in the United States beginning in June over its use of the family of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl chemicals, known as PFAS. In Australia, the chemicals have contaminated at least 90 sites and officials have acknowledged PFAS has contaminated the blood of up to 98 per cent of the world’s population.

Dubbed “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment and stay for years in the human bloodstream, PFAS was formerly the key ingredient in 3M’s popular fabric protector Scotchgard because of its unique ability to repel grease, oil and water.
Scientific studies linking the chemicals to cancer and a slew of other health effects have given rise to mounting public health concerns for governments internationally.

3M is the largest target among a string of corporations being sued in the multidistrict litigation, which the federal court has chosen to run through the District of South Carolina.
The mammoth case has absorbed the claims of 18 US states and territories as well as more than 100 water providers demanding compensation to filter PFAS from drinking water supplies.

It will also canvass the claims of thousands of individuals alleging they have suffered personal injury from the toxins, including testicular and kidney cancer.

The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for economic loss, damage to the environment, personal injury and medical monitoring over the use of PFAS in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) at airports, military bases, fire stations and industrial sites.

Albo is a virtue signalling show pony. He'll spend more time at the gay mardi gras than in Alice Springs. I have no problem with the gay mardi gras, just Albo getting in front of the cameras to showcase his support of minorities while not dealing with the real issues that face actual disadvantaged minorities. Too hard to do the real work, Albo prefers photos ops to getting his hands dirty and dealing with real problems.

While nowhere near as bad as ScoMo, Albo is a real disappointment so far.
 
Former US President Jimmy Carter, who at 98 is the longest living president in American history, has decided to forgo further medical treatment and will enter hospice care at his home in Georgia.

“After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention,” the Carter Centre said in a statement posted on Twitter on Saturday (Sunday AEDT)

An elderly Domino's worker who tumbled during a routine pizza delivery has had an incredible change of fortune after video of her fall was shared online.
Barbara Gillespie, 72, had her hands full as she attempted to deliver one family's order earlier this month. She tripped on a small step leading up to the front door and fell onto a chair spilling her delivery as she went down.

The family gifted the 72-year-old flowers and chocolate, before breaking the news of the online fundraising activity and sharing that A$72,000 had already been raised on the GoFundMe page in the short period of time since she fell.

Now with over $390,000 raised on the GoFundMe page, and the family pledging to not take a single cent of the money, the elderly worker has finally been able to hang up her Domino's cap and bid farewell to working.

Police cars forced to retreat after being 'actively targeted' and damaged by stolen vehicles

Police say three stolen cars repeatedly sideswiped their vehicles and forced them to withdraw during an incident last night, with one officer taken to hospital.

A police officer has been taken to hospital after two police cars were repeatedly rammed by stolen vehicles in an overnight incident in Townsville.
Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd alleged patrolling officers were "actively targeted" by three stolen cars, which were first spotted at Vincent around 1:15am.

"From that point on, the stolen vehicles then started to target the two police vehicles … to the point where at a couple of stages the police vehicles have been sideswiped by the stolen cars, causing damage to the sides of the police vehicles," he said.

Detective Inspector Shepherd said police were forced to withdraw to the Mundingburra Police Station to avoid further danger.
