Amibroker FAQ

2) The software is limited by the datastream that is entered into it. If I have values that are not part of the datastream from the data provider, (IE I've calculated them from a different program, such as a forecasting model in excel) can I incorporate these data points into the software or do the calculations need to all be done using the AFL language?

There's a tool called Quote Editor. From what I see, you change existing data at minute intervals, although that may be because I have my database selected to 1 minute intervals.

I have just got the trail version of AmiBroker. I have followed all the instructions for the creation of a database that can be viewed with the metastock plugin but no data is getting saved in there when I click retrieve.

Do I have to pay for it and get the licence key before I can do that?

I feel more comfortable with mechanical trading

Can one incorporate - Risk & Money Management in AmiBroker
I want to set stop losses, set trade sizes, and manage risk exposure
Which one is best as I have been reading about JBL Risk Manager in the shop section

Which one works best with AmiBroker

I am still researching all my options before I commit
Thanks in advance
KK

No one has offered an answer to my question above

I will however ask another?
Is it hard to make Amibroker into a full mechanical trading system with portfolio manager & risk manager
I want to minimise my risk of losing capital while learning how to trade. And expand beyond as I have more confidence

Cam I run Metastock data and use AB with no problems, not sure about the Trial vers but I didn't think data was a problem have you loaded all the files etc

Unfortunately the trial does not let you save 'databases' thus you must reload each time you start it up.

Once you get a licence however everything works fine ;)

Yes I have:
  1. created a new database
  2. sected metastock plugin
  3. disabled local data storage
  4. clicked configure
  5. browsed and found "trading data" selected it and it shows in the configure metastock plugin window
  6. clicked on "retrieve symbols" and the end result is the new database with nothing in it.

This is killing me.

By the way, the retrieve symbols action takes a split second. I would have expected it to take a minute or so. Maybe something wrong there.

Can anyone help?

Re: Amibroker help

I assume you have followed the steps here http://www.amibroker.com/support.html (scroll down to data and look for the nearest match to your data provider)

Alternatively a lot of data vendors have their own guides at their end for setting up amibroker (I know paritech and premium data do)

Ifocus,

No - I linked to the actual folders which Metastock looks at when I open charts in that program. You have given me something to go on with tonight which I appreciate - its so frustrating not being able to look at my own stuff because of a simple (it has to be simple) problem I can't address.

Marknz88,

I have, but I plan to be around for a while and hence will change date providers in a trice if this issue keeps giving me grief.

Ifocus,

you really helped me out with that screen shot - so much help knowing what to look for.

Now I have another issue - none of the charts are showing the price plot! Its there because the indicators on the 8 sheets are all showing values. I must have deleted the window or something. Do you know how to get this back?

By the way is that your own pink & grey in your avatar? I had a sulphur for a while - ended up selling her b/c of the racket and the fact that her eventually getting eaten by the dog was a certainty....

Yes her name is Layla valued family member, also have a male called George and they make one hell of a racket for various reasons, its great they are real Aussies.:D:D:D

One suggestion is to go over to Premium Data and try the trial that Richard has setup for AB. It will arrange all your AB sectors into watch lists etc, really , really good no obligation. Be warned its hard not to sign up because its so good.

I ran my own data into Metastock for 6 years or more but once I tried PD I got hooked ;)

I ran Metastock for years but after losing favorite files so many times and its limitations I finally spat it and went over to AB. I found AB difficult at 1st because of using MS for so long but persisted with AB and now could never go back. Its much more powerful / flexible and IMHO better bang for your buck.

Also connects straight to IB accounts plus more.

Anyway enough of the free plug, keep at it, its worth the up front effort just keep asking questions.

I just handed over my money for AmiBroker.

Got a fright because I wrongly thought that the Pro edition could only be used on a 64 bit machine.

Sent Tomasz a sh!tty email.

He replied immediately, was helpful, pointed me in the right direction and now I have been proven to be a d!ckhead.

I thanked him and said I'd confess on ASF.

Program looks excellent. I am confident that Tomasz will given first class support after my embarrassing experience.

lol, Cam it's a great program with good back up service, just make sure you get good data for it. I use premium data like IFocus and can't fault it.

Good luck with your learning.

I third that, Premium Data, clean, and it just works... integrates easily with AB.
