ADVICE ON HOW TO DEAL WITH VENOMOUS JELLYFISH
Doctors are warning people not to panic if stung by venomous jellyfish, after two cases of "Irukandji Syndrome" at beaches in Western Australia's north at the weekend.
Broome's Cable Beach was closed twice, after a 21 year-old woman and a 52 year old man were stung.
Studies are continuing to confirm which jellyfish species cause the life-threatening syndrome.
Symptoms include lower back pain, breathing difficulties and a sense of "impending doom" characterised by a constant fear of death.
District Medical Officer, Dr Conrad Macrokanis, says people should obey beach closure signs and wear protective clothing.
He says an ambulance should be called as soon as the pains start, but it's important people stay calm.
"So you just pour vinegar for thirty seconds or immerse a pad or a rag in vinegar and just have it there for a minute or two. Don't use fresh water to wash it off and don't use sand to rub it off because you'll make it worse," he said.
