Mares have had a good record in the Melbourne Cup of late, winning five of the last 16 and LUCIA VALENTINA leads the charge for the fairer sex in 2014.
 
Sign Off has a pretty good chance tomorrow, dutchie, LOL.

I couldn't watch the race without being a part of it.

Remarkable that none of the experts tipped the German horse; looks like they've been fast learners, given that Jumping and Military XC have long been THE equestrian events in Germany.
 
Yes, very sad to hear.

From jumping up and down, happy, I picked Protectionist, we were all sad after hearing of the death.

Being an international event for the last 150+ years and being in the spotlight more so now, I am hoping it can only get better with the treatment of horses.

We are only involved in horse racing this time of year, and I must say, I do worry watching the horses run, hoping nothing happens to them.
 
A very rare event. The owners of the horse will be bereft.
People don't realise how much race goers love horses. They follow their careers and love to visit the stables and promenade areas to look at them. many are involved in some capacity.

One of my friends owns ponies which she rides and enters into competitions and has a share of a racehorse which is doing quite well at present that she helps train sometimes before she goes to work (which means getting there at 4:30 in the morning). if you accused her of being a horse abuser she would just cry, it is her life as her love for horses is so deep.

The flag incident was stupid. Why was a kid waving an Australian Flag spooking the horse in the stabling area? I hate that sort of patriotism and the VRC will have to vet people from now on but I suppose it was someone in the public who had never gone to the races before.

I love horses. I love horse racing and are very saddened that things like this happen occasionally. Nothing could have been done about the heart attack but we must ensure that there is better security in the horse areas.

Very occasionally horses...and people die while doing exercise.

As I said, I was happy seeing the former winners at the parade that won 20 years ago.

I don't doubt for a moment that the people associated with these beautiful animals do love them.
But I do question that, if as is so often quoted, the horses love every minute, can't wait to run, then why is there any need to whip them?

And he didn't die of a heart attack. It was acute heart failure, a completely different condition and one not uncommon in hearts that have become enlarged and worked extremely hard to maintain blood circulation under stress.
Prior to the start of the race, I'm pretty sure it was this horse which demonstrated a reluctance to go into the barrier. Probably wasn't feeling well at that stage.
 
At the last turn, Admire Rakti was perfectly placed, but began running on the spot, and drifted back through the field. Such a sad thing.

The jockey's ride on Protectionist was brilliant. Just waited for a gap in the straight and surged through. One of the best Cup wins I've seen.
 
On ABC news Breakfast this morning it was mentioned that potentially thousands of horses are put down each year because they don't come up to the expectations of their owners in the racing or breeding stakes.

This must be a more worrying problem than one or two elites who are put down or die due to unforeseen circumstances
