On the ABC? The summary might be -

As much as I think Costello would be epic in the top job, I kinda think Tony derserves it.

BUT if he is going to challenge get it over with quick so the red evilness cant make too much mileage out of it.

He won't be back (IMO). He's had numerous chances but he never takes them. I wish he hadn't retired when he did (he would have made mince meat of the current government) but there is no turning back the clock.

I think you're right on all counts there Miss Hale.

Costello was never ruthless.

Such a quality is compulsory for the top job.

Yes, that's pretty much where I see it also. Would love to see Costello leading the Libs, but - given Tony Abbott's successful role as opposition leader, I can't see the Party smacking him in the face at this stage.

Pity, though, as - much as Mr Abbott has improved - he still struggles to attain Prime Ministership type status imo.

I'm not surprised to hear Costello has been putting himself up again. Remember a couple of months ago he pushed himself into the spotlight again. I can't now remember what it was about but suggested at the time it could have been part of a renewed interest in leading the party.

It ws one of the Gillard government's many bungles - to do with the chairmanship of the Future Fund. They hired Gonski to canvass the Board memebrs, who pointed Costello, and then they ffered it to Gonski (who BTW should have gracefully retreated).

Never underestimate the power of the draw to actually become Prime Minister of Australia.

It is irresistible to politicians and anyone who leads the Libs is assured of the job.

Hard to resist having a go ? you bet.

Ah, that's right. Thanks, Stumpy.

As a swinging voter Costello would seal the deal for a straight up Liberal vote from me ....

:)

Same here, the current government has to be as bad as it is for me to even think voting Tony; it will really hurt me if I have to do it!!!:(

On one hand, I would prfver Pete to Tony, but on the other, he did make the choice to decline the Liberal leadership and exit politics when the going got tough.

If Pete does want to come back, the problem is that he wants the prime-ministership on a platter.

What if he came back as treasurer, maybe life out there in the real world isn't what he thought.
He may just wants to cruise to retirement, with him as treasurer it would be a no brainer. They would be in power well past his retirement.
Not saying he wouldn't want the top job, but he may be over it.
Tony and the boys would jump at having him back.

He had an agreement that Howard backed out of, because Jeanette would not let Howard allow the top job to be handed to Costello.
If you are referring to why he did not challenge, he did not have the numbers.
Just remember Jeanette Howard was a silent politician.

Confirmation on my thoughts, are Howard lost his seat to a "first timer" and Costello won his comfortably.
Peter being a man of "integrity", walked away, because of his fellow MP's lack of support when he needed it.

That is how I remember it and the voters support at that election confirms it.
I can clearly remember the campaign put up by Howard, was " all about what he had achieved", and nothing about the future. Howard was aware of statistics "when voters want a change", and he did not have the guts to take on his wife.

The interest in Costello is more than likely based on suggestions of setting up more "sovereign wealth funds".
These would be set up by the states. However Costello has suggested setting them up as a sub - account to the future fund, to avoid two sets of handling charges.

But Costello states that before you put money into sovereign wealth fund you have to get it from somewhere.
This starts with a "surplus".

David Murry argues that the states should seize control and address the lack of infrastructure investment across the country but admits there is conflict with the federal government which needs to be addressed. The potential for the commonwealth to withdraw some financial support from a state is obvious, if the state is successful in setting up a fund.

Obviously it would be advantageous to have a coalition federal government.

So basically we could have a two tier fund system to future proof Australia.

This a debate going on in the back ground, and it has Costello linked to it.
This info. came from the an article "Sovereign Wealth", included in the AFR and is highlighted by "The fuel that drives the economic engine. A place where the powerful debate ideas and policy".

I think Labor has set this up to stir up Abbott, to take the "heat" off them with the Budget and the Thompson fiasco.

About right Dr. From the article in The Australian today, it seems fairly clear that Costello came sniffing around again (which for the record he denies).

But the moment has passed, and Mr Costello made his own bed.

Mr Abbott as we know isn't perfect in all policy areas, but he's been doing the hard yards, and if he was as bad as the ALP-Greens say, then why are they so obsessed with the Abbott Abbott Abbott line.

I agree, Logique. The incessant denigration of Abbott for the slightest little thing makes it look like he is a real threat to labor.

Abbott has had to put up with Gillard deriding him at almost every opportunity on national TV, puts up with her tirades and screeching in parliament and much of it seems quite derogatory.

I think he at least deserves a go as PM. I don't know too many people who could put up with this sort of denigration day in and day out as he has done.
